Code § 13A-11-14","heading":"Cruelty to Animals.","body":"(a) A person commits the crime of cruelty to animals if, except as otherwise authorized by law, he or she recklessly or with criminal negligence:\n(1) Subjects any animal to cruel mistreatment; or\n(2) Subjects any animal in his or her custody to cruel neglect; or\n(3) Kills or injures without good cause any animal belonging to another.\n(b) Cruelty to animals is a Class A misdemeanor and on the first conviction of a violation of this section shall be punished by a fine of not more than three thousand dollars ($3,000) or imprisonment in the county jail for not more than one year, or both fine and imprisonment; on a second conviction of a violation of this section, shall be punished by a fine of not less than five hundred dollars ($500) nor more than three thousand dollars ($3,000) or imprisonment in the county jail for not more than one year, or both fine and imprisonment; and on a third or subsequent conviction of a violation of this section, shall be punished by a fine of not less than one thousand dollars ($1,000) nor more than three thousand dollars ($3,000) or imprisonment in the county jail for not more than one year, or both fine and imprisonment.","path":["Title 13A Criminal Code.","Chapter 11 Offenses Against Public Order and Safety.","Article 1 Offenses Against Public Order and Decency."],"source_url":"https://alison.legislature.state.al.us/code-of-alabama?section=13A-11-14","current_through":"Act 2026-611","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T14:01:52Z","sha256":"9d7fe24f2ca8804cb417bacb5bd45667f581f6ed2dc41bffe2df2096297d2099","source_id":"us-al","stale":false,"prev":"us-al/ala.-code-13a-11-13","next":"us-al/ala.-code-13a-11-14.1"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
