Code § 22-19-171","heading":"Search and Notification.","body":"(a) The following persons shall make a reasonable search of an individual who the person reasonably believes is dead or near death for a document of gift or other information identifying the individual as a donor or as an individual who made a refusal:\n(1) a law enforcement officer, firefighter, paramedic, or other emergency rescuer finding the individual; and\n(2) if no other source of the information is immediately available, a hospital, as soon as practical after the individual’s arrival at the hospital.\n(b) If a document of gift or a refusal to make an anatomical gift is located by the search required by subsection (a)(1) and the individual or deceased individual to whom it relates is taken to a hospital, the person responsible for conducting the search shall send the document of gift or refusal to the hospital.\n(c) A person is not subject to criminal or civil liability for failing to discharge the duties imposed by this section but may be subject to administrative sanctions.","path":["Title 22 Health, Mental Health, and Environmental Control.","Title 1 Health and Environmental Control Generally.","Chapter 19 Dead Bodies.","Article 9 Revised Uniform Anatomical Gift Act."],"source_url":"https://alison.legislature.state.al.us/code-of-alabama?section=22-19-171","current_through":"Act 2026-611","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T14:01:53Z","sha256":"fe6141882b074f8e6b4fa25d19b6bbb8e39d0bfc0931c1d35650cef425c4f698","source_id":"us-al","stale":false,"prev":"us-al/ala.-code-22-19-170","next":"us-al/ala.-code-22-19-172"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
