Code § 36-37-5","heading":"Remedies for Violations.","body":"(a) A person alleging a violation of this chapter may bring a civil action for appropriate injunctive relief, actual damages, or both. Damages awarded under this section may include one of the following, as appropriate:\n(1) A sum of not less than two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500) to compensate for injury or loss caused by each violation of this chapter.\n(2) For an intentional violation of this chapter, a sum not to exceed three times the sum described in subdivision (1).\n(b) A court, in rendering a judgment in an action brought under this chapter, may award all or a portion of the costs of litigation, including reasonable attorney fees and witness fees, to the complainant in the action if the court determines that the award is appropriate.\n(c) A person who knowingly violates this chapter shall be guilty of a Class C misdemeanor.","path":["Title 36 Public Officers and Employees.","Chapter 37 Personal Privacy Protection Act."],"source_url":"https://alison.legislature.state.al.us/code-of-alabama?section=36-37-5","current_through":"Act 2026-611","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T14:01:54Z","sha256":"48be16a96ad11b2efa5310f03d3066776a4b76e534078e79f34f1c395877d489","source_id":"us-al","stale":false,"prev":"us-al/ala.-code-36-37-4","next":"us-al/ala.-code-36-37-6"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
