Stat. § 483.913","heading":"Definitions.","body":"As used in this part, the term:\n(1) “Department” means the Department of Health.\n(2) “Genetic counselor” means a person licensed under this part to practice genetic counseling.\n(3) “Scope of practice of genetic counseling” means the process of advising an individual or a family affected by or at risk of genetic disorders, including:\n(a) Obtaining and evaluating individual, family, and medical histories to determine genetic risk for genetic or medical conditions and diseases in a patient, his or her offspring, and other family members;\n(b) Discussing the features, natural history, means of diagnosis, genetic and environmental factors, and management of risk for genetic or medical conditions and diseases;\n(c) Identifying, ordering, and coordinating genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies as appropriate for a genetic assessment;\n(d) Integrating genetic laboratory test results and other diagnostic studies with personal and family medical history to assess and communicate risk factors for genetic or medical conditions and diseases;\n(e) Explaining the clinical implications of genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies and their results;\n(f) Evaluating the client’s or family’s responses to the condition or risk of recurrence and providing client-centered counseling and anticipatory guidance;\n(g) Identifying and using community resources that provide medical, educational, financial, and psychosocial support and advocacy;\n(h) Providing written documentation of medical, genetic, and counseling information for families and health care professionals; and\n(i) Referring patients to a physician for diagnosis and treatment.\nHistory.—s. 1, ch. 2021-133.","path":["CHAPTER 483 HEALTH TESTING SERVICES"],"source_url":"https://www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute\u0026URL=0400-0499/0483/0483.html","current_through":"2026 Florida Statutes","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-08-27T02:07:15Z","sha256":"68ab974e76da2e8ffce36861df839b1ac674a32172228ffbdfaeaea8554ed7f1","source_id":"us-fl","stale":false,"prev":"us-fl/fla.-stat.-483.912","next":"us-fl/fla.-stat.-483.914"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
