{"data":{"id":"us-ga/o.c.g.a.-20-1-15","jurisdiction":"us-ga","citation":"O.C.G.A. § 20-1-15","heading":"Definitions.","body":"As used in this article, the term:\n(1) “Child” means any individual under 18 years of age.\n(2) “Fictive kin” means an individual who is known to a child as a relative but is not in fact related by blood or marriage to such child and with whom such child has resided or had significant contact.\n(3) “Kinship caregiver” means a grandparent, great-grandparent, aunt, uncle, great aunt, great uncle, cousin, sibling, or fictive kin who has assumed responsibility for raising a child in an informal, noncustodial, or guardianship capacity upon the parents or legal custodians of such child:\n(A) Losing or abdicating the ability to care for such child; or\n(B) Being unable to ensure that the child will attend school for reasons, including, but not limited to:\n(i) A parent or legal custodian being unable to provide care due to the death of a parent or legal custodian;\n(ii) A serious illness or terminal illness of a parent or legal custodian;\n(iii) The physical or mental condition of the parents or legal custodians such that proper care and supervision of the child cannot be provided;\n(iv) The incarceration of a parent or legal custodian;\n(v) The inability to locate the parents or legal custodians;\n(vi) The loss or uninhabitability of the child’s home as the result of a natural disaster; or\n(vii) A period of active military duty of the parents or legal custodians exceeding 24 months.\n(4) “Legal custodian” means a person who has been awarded permanent custody of a child by court order.\n(5) “Parent” means the legal father or the legal mother of a child.\n(6) “Reasonable efforts” means actions that a reasonable individual would find sufficient to determine whether one conclusion is more likely than the other.","path":["TITLE 20 Education","CHAPTER 1 General Provisions","Article 1A Caregiver Educational Consent"],"source_url":"https://archive.org/download/gov.ga.ocga.2018/release86.2022.11/gov.ga.ocga.title.20.odt","current_through":"Release 86 (2022-11)","vintage":"Public.Resource.Org bulk O.C.G.A., Release 86 (2022-11), retrieved 2026-09-17","retrieved_at":"2026-09-17T19:34:57Z","sha256":"20a0dfc8663f8fc28eeeef06179524c82ca0df650af7d04601ae43cc99def379","source_id":"us-ga","stale":false,"prev":"us-ga/o.c.g.a.-20-1-14","next":"us-ga/o.c.g.a.-20-1-16"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
