Stat. § 231-96","heading":"Failure to record transaction.","body":"(a) It shall be unlawful for any person doing business under chapter 237, other than casual sales, to conduct any transaction in cash and fail to:\n\n(1) Offer a receipt or other record of the transaction; and\n\n(2) Maintain a contemporaneously generated record of all business transactions conducted each day,\n\nwhether handwritten or generated by a manually operated or electronic cash register. Each day a person is in violation of this section shall be treated as a separate violation.\n\n(b) Except as provided in subsection (c), any person who violates this section shall be subject to a fine not to exceed $1,000; provided that if the person is a cash-based business, the fine shall not exceed $2,000.\n\n(c) If the person, including a cash-based business, is otherwise in compliance with title 14 at the time of violation of this section, the fine for a violation of this section shall be commensurate with the violation, as determined by the department in accordance with rules adopted pursuant to chapter 91.","path":["HI Code","Division 1","Title 14","Chapter 231"],"source_url":"http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol04_Ch0201-0257/HRS0231/HRS_0231-0096.htm","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:11Z","sha256":"e56b1ac12f221ed62738cb66e0651d02e07057247f20768d13ab0f42c4709907","source_id":"us-hi","stale":false,"prev":"us-hi/haw.-rev.-stat.-231-95","next":"us-hi/haw.-rev.-stat.-231-98"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
