Stat. § 458-6.5","heading":"License; application; qualifications.","body":"(a) An individual shall be licensed as a dispensing optician to engage in the occupation of dispensing optician.\n\n(b) The applicant shall provide evidence of having:\n\n(1) The equivalent of a high school education and two years of opticianry work experience as required by administrative rules;\n\n(2) Graduation from an opticianry course accredited by the Commission on Opticianry Accreditation; or\n\n(3) A current and valid license as a dispensing optician in another state or territory of the United States and passage of the national examinations specified in subsection (c).\n\nThe applicant shall submit to the director an application for a license on a form prescribed by the director, which shall include the applicant's experience and signature, and an application fee.\n\n(c) The applicant shall provide evidence of having passed the following examinations:\n\n(1) The National Opticianry Competency Examination;\n\n(2) The National Contact Lens Registry Examination; and\n\n(3) A nationally standardized practical examination may be required by the director as a prerequisite for dispensing optician licensure.\n\nAny applicant who has previously passed both the National Opticianry Competency Examination and the National Contact Lens Registry Examination in a state or territory of the United States shall not be required to retake these examinations provided that the applicant's passing scores have been certified.","path":["HI Code","Division 2","Title 25","Chapter 458"],"source_url":"http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol10_Ch0436-0474/HRS0458/HRS_0458-0006_0005.htm","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:11Z","sha256":"7c4a47fa1fbd800c4ec42c21d7430d43c7e5e86b673aee0051909795be6ecbbd","source_id":"us-hi","stale":false,"prev":"us-hi/haw.-rev.-stat.-458-4","next":"us-hi/haw.-rev.-stat.-458-6.6"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
