{"data":{"id":"us-il/105-ilcs-128-60","jurisdiction":"us-il","citation":"105 ILCS 128/60","heading":"Cardiac emergency response plan.","body":"(Text of Section before amendment by P.A. 104-759)\n(a) A school district and a private school shall develop a cardiac emergency response plan in place in accordance with guidelines set forth by either the American Heart Association or other nationally recognized, evidence-based standards that addresses the appropriate response to incidents involving an individual experiencing sudden cardiac arrest or a similar life-threatening emergency while at a school or at a school-sponsored activity or event. The plan must be distributed to all teachers, administrators, school support personnel, coaches, and other school staff identified by school administrators at each school.\n(b) A cardiac emergency response plan shall include, but is not limited to, the following:\n(1) Procedures to follow in the event of a cardiac emergency at a school.\n(2) A listing of every automated external defibrillator that is present and clearly marked or easily accessible at school athletic venues and events and at school and the maintenance schedule for the automated external defibrillator. The automated external defibrillators shall be installed in accordance with the Physical Fitness Facility Medical Emergency Preparedness Act, guidelines from the American Heart Association, or other nationally recognized guidelines focused on emergency cardiovascular care.\n(3) Information on hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use of automated external defibrillators to teachers, administrators, coaches, assistant coaches, and other school staff identified by school administrators, in accordance with Section 22-115 of the School Code.\n(Text of Section after amendment by P.A. 104-759)\nCardiac emergency response plan.\n(a) A school district and a private school shall develop a cardiac emergency response plan, in accordance with guidelines set forth by either (i) the American Heart Association or Project ADAM or (ii) other nationally recognized, evidence-based standards, that addresses the appropriate response to incidents involving an individual experiencing sudden cardiac arrest or a similar life-threatening emergency while at a school or at a school-sponsored activity or event. The plan must be distributed to all teachers, administrators, school support personnel, coaches, and other school staff identified by school administrators at each school.\n(b) A cardiac emergency response plan shall include, but is not limited to, the following:\n(1) Procedures to follow in the event of a cardiac emergency while on school premises.\n(2) A listing of every automated external defibrillator (AED) that is present. Each AED shall be clearly marked, maintained as recommended by the manufacturer, and easily accessible at school athletic venues and events and at school. The AEDs shall be installed in accordance with the Physical Fitness Facility Medical Emergency Preparedness Act, guidelines from the American Heart Association, or other nationally recognized guidelines focused on emergency cardiovascular care.\n(3) Education on the symptoms and warning signs of sudden cardiac arrest, hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the use of AEDs for teachers, administrators, coaches, assistant coaches, and other school staff identified by school administrators, in accordance with Section 22-115 of the School Code.\n(c) A school district shall conduct an annual cardiac response drill to practice the steps established in its cardiac emergency response plan, which may be done in partnership with local emergency medical services. A cardiac response drill may be conducted without student participation.\n(d) A school district, school board and each member of the school board, governing body and each member of the governing body of a nonpublic school, administrator, principal, teacher, school employee, and member of a school district's safety or crisis response team, whether a student or an adult, are immune from any liability that might otherwise be incurred or caused by an act or omission related to the requirements under this Section, including any act or omission while carrying out any elements of a cardiac emergency response plan, as developed or implemented in accordance with this Section, unless the act or omission was willful or wanton.","path":["CHAPTER 105 SCHOOLS","School Safety Drill Act."],"source_url":"https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ILCS/details?ActID=2735\u0026ChapterID=17\u0026ChapAct=FullText\u0026Print=True","current_through":"at least Public Act 104-790","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-15T04:46:26Z","sha256":"ce6988849938a66b51807c4b17f2b14c8792b3fa6a7610e4cff91602a5b2d31c","source_id":"us-il","stale":false,"prev":"us-il/105-ilcs-128-55","next":"us-il/105-ilcs-128-65"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
