{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-118.225","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 118.225","heading":"Determination of order of names on ballot.","body":"(1) The order of the names of candidates or slates of candidates to be voted for by the\nelectors of the entire state shall be determined by lot and certified and printed on the\nballots with the designation of the respective offices. The Secretary of State shal l\nprepare lists of the counties of each congressional district of the state and, for each\ncongressional district, the Secretary of State shall draw from the names of all\ncandidates or slates of candidates for each office to determine the order in which\nthey shall appear on the ballot. The order of names of the candidates or slates of\ncandidates for each congressional district shall be certified to the county clerks of\nall the counties that comprise the district.\n(2) For all other offices for which nominatio n papers and petitions are filed with the\nSecretary of State, the order of names of candidates for each office shall be\ndetermined by lot at a public drawing to be held in the office of the Secretary of\nState at 2 p.m., standard time, on the Thursday follo wing the filing deadline for the\nprimary as established in KRS 83A.045, 118.165, and 118A.060 or the Thursday\nfollowing the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June preceding the regular\nelection.\n(3) For all offices for which nomination papers and pet itions are filed in the office of\nthe county clerk, the order in which the names of candidates for each office are to\nbe printed on the ballot shall be determined by lot at a public drawing in the office\nof the county clerk at 2 p.m., standard time, on the  Thursday following the filing\ndeadline for the primary as established in KRS 83A.045, 118.165, and 118A.060 or\nthe Thursday following the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June preceding\nthe regular election.\n(4) For all offices for which the deadli ne for filing nomination papers and petitions is\ngoverned by KRS 83A.165(4)(c) or 118.375(2), the order in which the names of\ncandidates for each office are to be printed shall be determined by lot at a public\ndrawing in the office at the place of filing a t 2 p.m., standard time, on the Thursday\nfollowing the second Tuesday in August preceding the regular election.\n(5) If the number of certified candidates or slates of candidates cannot be placed on a\nballot which can be accommodated on voting equipment cur rently in use in the\ncounty, the county clerk shall notify the State Board of Elections, as provided in\nKRS 118.215.","path":["KRS Chapter 118"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=54649","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:50:15Z","sha256":"9909bd31c9ea6b706752cea48208675197be0c6280a3a220fd2c148bd5eb58e7","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-118.220","next":"us-ky/krs-118.226"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
