{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-118.591","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 118.591","heading":"Nomination of presidential preference primary candidate by petition --","body":"Qualification of candidate through filing of notice of candidacy.\n(1) Any person seeking the endorsement by a political party for the office of President\nof the United State s, or any group organized in this state on behalf of, and with the\nconsent of, the person, may file with the Secretary of State certified petitions signed\nby five thousand (5,000) persons who, at the time they sign, are registered and\nqualified voters in t he Commonwealth and are affiliated, by registration, with the\nsame political party as the candidate for whom petitions are filed.\n(2) The petitions shall be filed by the petitioners with the Secretary of State no later\nthan the first Friday following the f irst Monday in January preceding a presidential\npreference primary.\n(3) The petitions shall state:\n(a) The name of the candidate for nomination and the party of which the\ncandidate is a member; and\n(b) The name and address of the chair of the group circulating such petition.\n(4) The Secretary of State shall determine the sufficiency of petitions filed with him or\nher and shall immediately communicate his or her determination to the chair of the\ngroup which has filed the petitions.\n(5) In lieu of the petitio n requirements of subsections (1) to (4) of this section, a\ncandidate may qualify to appear on the presidential preference primary ballot of the\ncandidate's political party by filing with the Secretary of State, no later than the first\nFriday following the  first Monday in January preceding a presidential preference\nprimary, a notice of candidacy signed by the candidate and either of the following:\n(a) A certification by the Federal Election Commission that, by the filing\ndeadline, the candidate has qualified for matching federal campaign funds; or\n(b) Evidence that, by the filing deadline, the candidate's name is qualified to\nappear on the presidential preference primary ballot of the candidate's political\nparty in at least twenty (20) other states.\n(6) The Secretary of State shall determine the sufficiency of the documentation\nprovided pursuant to subsection (5) of this section and shall immediately\ncommunicate his or her determination to the candidate or the candidates's agent.","path":["KRS Chapter 118"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=49478","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:50:16Z","sha256":"b05418b5e64c885fc555b1b4ab1b8c871e32268bb846db93df9b5627635519d7","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-118.590","next":"us-ky/krs-118.600"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
