{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-134.160","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 134.160","heading":"Office rooms, hours, and books of sheriff.","body":"(1) The governing body of a county shall provide the sheriff with office space that\nincludes a secure place to keep the records of his or her office.\n(2) (a) The sheriff shall keep an accurate account of all moneys received and all\ndisbursements made, showing:\n1. The amount;\n2. The date and time of payment or disbursement;\n3. The name of the person making the payment or to whom the\ndisbursement was made; and\n4. The account the payment was credited to or the disbursement deducted\nfrom.\n(b) The sheriff shall main tain records that account for separate and distinct\nappropriations in separate and distinct accounts.\n(c) The sheriff shall balance all accounts on a monthly basis unless otherwise\nprovided by law. The cost of maintaining records and accounts in whatever\nform shall be paid for as other county records.\n(3) All payments received by the sheriff shall be entered immediately by the sheriff on\nhis or her books. The sheriff may provide a receipt specifying the amount and to\nwhat account the payment was credited to the person making the payment.\n(4) The sheriff shall obtain a receipt for all disbursements made by the sheriff.\n(5) Other than as permitted for investment and expenditures by this chapter, the sheriff\nshall not apply or use any money received by him or h er for any purpose other than\nthat for which the money was paid or collected.\n(6) The sheriff shall keep all books and accounts in the manner and form required by\nthe department.\n(7) The books of the sheriff shall be open at all times to the inspection of the Auditor of\nPublic Accounts, the department, the governing body of the county or any member\nthereof, the governing body of any other taxing district for which the sheriff collects\ntaxes or any member thereof, the Commonwealth's and county attorneys, and any\ntaxpayer or person having any interest therein.","path":["KRS Chapter 134"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=28395","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:50:25Z","sha256":"0e4419208be23b9ee5ad89073f014ffe93048dc1d4d99e94001520aa3d45b369","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-134.150","next":"us-ky/krs-134.170"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
