{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-156.555","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 156.555","heading":"Center for Middle School Academic Achievement -- Duties -- Location at","body":"college or university.\n(1) The Center for Middle School Academic Achievement is created to improve the\ncontent knowledge and instructional practice of middle school teachers t hrough the\ncoordination of professional development programs for middle school teachers, the\nprovision of technical assistance to schools and teachers, and the collection and\ndissemination of information and research regarding effective models of teaching\nthe core disciplines to middle school students.\n(2) The center shall:\n(a) Foster collaboration between the center, the Department of Education, the\nEducation Professional Standards Board, postsecondary institutions of\neducation, postsecondary departments o r colleges of arts and sciences, and\nother entities to develop content -based teacher preparation programs and\nongoing professional development programs for middle school teachers,\naligned with the Department of Education's core content for assessment;\n(b) Assist school districts in assessing and addressing their needs and deficiencies\nin middle school curriculum and instruction;\n(c) Assist grant recipients of the Middle School Mathematics and Science\nScholars Program established under KRS 158.848 with profe ssional\ndevelopment for participating teachers;\n(d) Assist middle school teachers in establishing and maintaining networks of\ncommunication to share information regarding middle school instructional\npractice, curriculum development, and other areas of comm on interest,\nbuilding upon existing networks;\n(e) Develop and maintain a clearinghouse for information about:\n1. Educational models addressing content knowledge and skills of middle\nschool students, based on reliable, replicable research;\n2. Core content achievement levels of Kentucky students in relation to\nstudents in other states and other countries; and\n3. The relationship between student achievement levels and curriculum\ncontent, curriculum structure and alignment with content, teacher\ntraining, and teaching methods;\n(f) Develop and implement a research structure, in collaboration with the\nDepartment of Education, to evaluate the effectiveness of different middle\nschool instructional models; and\n(g) Submit an annual report to the Governor and the Legislative Research\nCommission by September 1 of each year. The report shall include\ninformation outlining the center's activities, information provided by the\nKentucky Department of Education regarding the use of money from the\nTeachers' Professional Growth Fund, and other information regarding efforts\nto improve the quality of middle school instruction in Kentucky.\n(3) With the advice of the commissioner of education and the Education Professional\nStandards Board, the Council on Postsecondary Edu cation shall develop a process\nto solicit, review, and approve a proposal for locating the Center for Middle School\nAcademic Achievement at a public or private college or university. The council\nshall choose a college or university that has demonstrated th e coordination of\ncourse delivery between the faculties of the college of education and arts and\nsciences departments within the college or university.
