{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-158.1411","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 158.1411","heading":"Financial literacy requirements for high school graduation --","body":"Establishment of academic standards, curricula, and guidelines for financial\nliteracy.\n(1) For students entering grade nine (9) on or before June 30, 2025, successful\ncompletion of one (1) or more courses or programs that meet the financial literacy\nstandards shall be a Kentucky public high school graduation requirement.\n(2) For students entering grade nine (9) on or after July 1, 2025, successful completion\nof a one (1) credit c ourse in financial literacy shall be a Kentucky public high\nschool graduation requirement.\n(3) The graduation requirement in subsections (1) and (2) shall also apply to a student\npursuing an early graduation program as established in KRS 158.142.\n(4) The financial literacy course required in subsection (2) of this section shall align to\nthe student's individual learning plan and include but not be limited to instruction in\nthe following areas:\n(a) Budgeting;\n(b) Saving and investing;\n(c) Credit and debt;\n(d) Insurance and risk management, including but not limited to personal\ninsurance policies;\n(e) Taxes; and\n(f) The necessity of critical review and understanding of documents prior to\nsigning agreement or approval and the ability to provide a signature in\ncursive.\n(5) The financial literacy course required in subsection  (2) of this section shall be\naccepted as an elective course requirement for high school graduation\nnotwithstanding any other provisions of law.\n(6) In accordance with KRS 156.160, the Kentucky Board of Education shall\npromulgate administrative regulations establishing academic standards for financial\nliteracy.\n(7) The local superintendent, after consultation with the local board of education,\nschool-based decision making council, and principal of each high school, shall\ndetermine curricula for course offer ings that are aligned with the financial literacy\nacademic standards promulgated by the Kentucky Board of Education.\n(8) The Department of Education shall develop financial literacy guidelines for local\nschools and districts.\n(9) Local schools and districts may consult with the Kentucky Financial Empowerment\nCommission established in KRS 41.450 when developing and implementing the\nfinancial literacy standards.\n(10) The Department of Education shall identify through the system for uniform\nacademic course cod es, which courses meet the requirements for the financial\nliteracy course required in subsection (2) of this section.","path":["KRS Chapter 158"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=56188","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:04Z","sha256":"e4aabe1db8f74d7eeb1baf0ed0f50b57c9fbb457f38511f22e358d233f390cc9","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-158.141","next":"us-ky/krs-158.1413"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
