{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-158.163","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 158.163","heading":"Earthquake and tornado emergency procedure system.","body":"The board of each local school district, and the governing body of each private and\nparochial school or school district, shall establish an earthquake and tornado emergency\nprocedure system in every public or private school building in its jurisdiction hav ing a\ncapacity of fifty (50) or more students, or having more than one (1) classroom. The\nearthquake and tornado emergency procedure system shall include, but not be limited to,\nall of the following:\n(1) A school building disaster plan, ready for implement ation at any time, for\nmaintaining the safety and care of students and staffs. A drop procedure and safe\narea evacuation practice shall be held at least twice during each school year, with\nthe first practice for a drop procedure and a safe area evacuation being held within\nthe first thirty (30) instructional days of each school year and one (1) practice being\nheld during the month of January;\n(2) A drop procedure. As used in this section, \"drop procedure\" means an activity by\nwhich each student and staff member takes cover under a table or desk, dropping to\nhis or her knees, with the head protected by the arms, and the back to the windows;\n(3) A safe area. As used in this section, \"safe area\" means a designated space including\nan enclosed area with no windows, a basement or the lowest floor using the interior\nhallway or rooms, or taking shelter under sturdy furniture;\n(4) Protective measures to be taken before, during, and following an earthquake or\ntornado; and\n(5) A program to ensure that the students and t he certificated and classified staff are\naware of, and properly trained in, the earthquake and tornado emergency procedure\nsystem.","path":["KRS Chapter 158"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=42583","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:04Z","sha256":"49177fdd6b1c219d6e38a153662fcc1388050da93ad507c136f791cf41aa1b0e","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-158.1622","next":"us-ky/krs-158.164"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
