{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-158.301","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 158.301","heading":"Legislative findings on skin cancer risks -- Schools encouraged to educate","body":"students on risks of exposure to ultraviolet rays.\n(1) The General Assembly finds that:\n(a) The chief cause of skin cancer is exposure to ultraviolet rays from natural\nsunlight and artificial sources;\n(b) According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is one (1) of the most\ncommon types of cancer in the United States, with one (1) in five (5)\nAmericans developing skin cancer in his or her lifetime and one (1) American\ndying from skin cancer every hour;\n(c) The lifetime risk of getting skin cancer is linked to sun exposure and sunburn\nduring childhood and adolescence;\n(d) World and national health organizations have published guidelines or\ninstructional materials regarding sun safety and skin cancer prevention for\nschools; and\n(e) Schools have the potential to positively influence pupil behavior regarding\nskin cancer prevention.\n(2) The General Assembly hereby encourages each public school to provide age -\nappropriate educatio n to all students on the risks associated with exposure to\nultraviolet rays from natural sunlight and artificial sources.\n(a) The education should be included within the existing health curriculum as\nrequired by KRS 156.160(1)(a) and in accordance with the  curriculum policy\nadopted by the school-based decision making council or, if none exists, by the\nschool principal.\n(b) The education should be consistent with guidelines published by world or\nnational health organizations and should include, but not be limited to:\n1. The facts and statistics about skin cancer;\n2. The cause and impact of skin cancer; and\n3. Strategies and behaviors to reduce individual risks for skin cancer.\n(c) The Kentucky Department of Education shall provide instructional resources,\nincluding information from national standards and health organizations.","path":["KRS Chapter 158"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=3496","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:04Z","sha256":"9c9806e6763881766a833f86147ed6b69a6013eb9d7b17cd0f0ecc66a7c5b307","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-158.300","next":"us-ky/krs-158.302"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
