{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-16.010","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 16.010","heading":"Definitions for KRS 16.010 to 16.199.","body":"As used in KRS 16.010 to 16.199, unless the context requires otherwise:\n(1) \"Board\" means the Department of Kentucky State Police Personnel Board;\n(2) \"Cabinet\" means the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet;\n(3) \"Cadet Trooper\" means an applicant for employm ent as an officer who is selected\nby the commissioner to attend the department training program, and who is\nemployed as a trainee;\n(4) \"Civilian\" means experts, statisticians, clerks, and other assistants who are not\npeace officers;\n(5) \"Commissioner\" mean s the commissioner of the Department of Kentucky State\nPolice;\n(6) \"Continuous service\" for participation in and eligibility for the promotional process\nfor each rank of officer commissioned under this chapter means:\n(a) For sergeant, service as a commissi oned Kentucky State Police officer that\nhas not been interrupted by actual separation from the department, whether in\nthe form of resignation, retirement, or termination;\n(b) For lieutenant, service in grade as a sergeant that has not been interrupted by\nactual separation from the department, whether in the form of resignation,\nretirement, termination, or by demotion in accordance with KRS 16.140; and\n(c) For captain, service in grade as lieutenant that has not been interrupted by\nactual separation from the department, whether in the form of resignation,\nretirement, termination, or by demotion in accordance with KRS 16.140;\n(7) \"CVE R Class\" means any retir ed Kentucky State Police commercial vehicle\nenforcement officer commissioned under KRS 16.187 who has become reemployed\nwith the department on a contractual basis pursuant to KRS 16.196 to 16.199;\n(8) \"Department\" means the Department of Kentucky State Police;\n(9) \"Missing adult\" means an individual who is:\n(a) At or above the age of majority pursuant to KRS 2.015; and\n(b) Identified by law enforcement as a missing person who may be in immediate\ndanger due to circumstances which indicate an abduction or kidnapping;\n(10) \"Missing child\" means an individual who is:\n(a) Below the age of majority pursuant to KRS 2.015;\n(b) Identified by law enforcement as missing and who may be in immediate\ndanger; and\n(c) An individual with an intellectual disability or mental illness as defined in\nKRS 210.005;\n(11) \"Officer\" means any member of the Department of Kentucky State Police, other\nthan an individual employed as a Trooper R Class or CVE R Class, who possesses\nthe powers of a peace officer;\n(12) \"Secretary\" means the secretary of Justice and Public Safety Cabinet; and\n(13) \"Trooper R Class\" means any retired Kentucky State Police officer commissioned\nunder this chapter who has become reemployed with the department on a\ncontractual basis pursuant to KRS 16.196 to 16.199.","path":["KRS Chapter 16"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=54840","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:48:36Z","sha256":"04626886ede32cbdba6a93673cac2250b0155c8ac789c745d105615f4de1dec7","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-15a.990","next":"us-ky/krs-16.020"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
