{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-16.176","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 16.176","heading":"Missing child notification system -- Kentucky Ian Alert System --","body":"Requirements -- Notification by department -- Cooperation by all law\nenforcement agencies.\n(1) The Department of Kentucky State Police, in cooperation with the Transportation\nCabinet, the Division of Emergency Management, and media providers, shall create\nand operate a system to notify the public when any individual is determined to be a\nmissing child and the department determines that public notification might aid in\nthe recover y of the individual. The system shall be known as the Kentucky Ian\nAlert System.\n(2) The system shall utilize existing resources, including but not limited to electronic\nhighway signs, the Amber Alert System, the emergency broadcast system, law\nenforcement communications systems, and local, regional, and statewide media\nproviders, as authorized and under conditions permitted by the federal government.\n(3) No public alert using the system shall be issued unless the department, in\nconsultation with the law en forcement agency in the jurisdiction where the missing\nchild was reported, has determined:\n(a) That the physical safety of the missing child may be endangered;\n(b) That public notification is the most appropriate method of recovering the\nmissing child in a safe and efficient manner; and\n(c) The geographic area in which the notification shall be made.\n(4) If it is determined by the department that public notification shall be initiated, the\ndepartment shall notify and provide the public and private agencies and\norganizations that will provide the notification with the information that the\ndepartment deems necessary.\n(5) All law enforcement agencies in the Commonwealth shall cooperate with the\ndepartment in the provision and dissemination of information regarding any missing\nchild.\n(6) No law enforcement agency, other than the department, shall activate the\nnotification system specified in this section without the authority of the department.\n(7) The system shall be operated by all agencies of the Commonwealth within existing\nbudgetary appropriations.","path":["KRS Chapter 16"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=54842","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:48:36Z","sha256":"a291dc44ab4e700393fe4446cbb2c4bd09a6f9c7964d2984a245747dc5872424","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-16.175","next":"us-ky/krs-16.177"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
