{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-16.179","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 16.179","heading":"When public alert may be issued -- Duties of requesting agency,","body":"department, and all law enforcement agencies in Kentucky.\n(1) No public alert using the Kentucky Blue Alert System shall be issued unless\nrequested by a law enforcement agency and, upon consultation with that agency, the\ndepartment determines:\n(a) That a peace officer has been killed, seriously injured, or is missing in the line\nof duty;\n(b) That public notification is the most appropriate method of locating the officer\nor identifying and locating a suspected offender who poses an imminent threat\nto the public or other law enforcement personnel;\n(c) That there is sufficient information available relating to the officer's last\nknown location and the physical description of any suspected off ender or\nvehicle involved that could be broadcast to assist in locating the officer or\nsuspected offender; and\n(d) The geographic area in which the notification shall be made.\n(2) The requesting agency shall provide the information required by administrati ve\nregulation to the Department of Kentucky State Police prior to activation of the\nKentucky Blue Alert System.\n(3) If it is determined by the department that public notification shall be initiated, the\ndepartment shall notify the public and private agenci es and organizations that will\nprovide the notification and provide those agencies and organizations with the\ninformation that the department deems necessary.\n(4) All law enforcement agencies in the Commonwealth shall cooperate with the\ndepartment in the p rovision and dissemination of information regarding any peace\nofficer who has been killed, seriously injured, or is missing in the line of duty.\n(5) No law enforcement agency, other than the department, shall activate the Kentucky\nBlue Alert System without the authority of the department.","path":["KRS Chapter 16"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=40566","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:48:36Z","sha256":"0ab98dae6afdfad12a5127b809518cdef21d57e581c13770962191105750fcf2","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-16.177","next":"us-ky/krs-16.180"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
