{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-160.348","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 160.348","heading":"Advanced placement, International Baccalaureate, dual enrollment, dual","body":"credit courses, and other advanced coursework.\n(1) (a) The Kentucky Department of Education shall make available to schools\ninformation concerning the prerequisite content  necessary for success in\nadvanced coursework, including secondary courses, Advanced Placement or\nAP courses, and International Baccalaureate or IB courses. The department\nshall provide sample syllabi, instructional resources, and instructional\nsupports for teachers that will assist in preparing students for more rigorous\ncoursework.\n(b) Each school-based decision making council, or principal if none exists, shall\noffer a core curriculum of AP, IB, dual enrollment, dual credit courses, or\nother advanced cou rsework using either or both on -site instruction or online\nalternatives. In addition, each school -based decision making council shall\ncomply with any additional requirements for AP, IB, dual enrollment, dual\ncredit, and advanced coursework courses that may  be established\ncooperatively by the Kentucky Department of Education, the Education\nProfessional Standards Board, and the Council on Postsecondary Education in\naccordance with the definitions in KRS 158.007.\n(c) When practicable, the school -based decisio n making council, or principal if\nnone exists, shall offer advanced coursework, as defined in KRS 158.6453, in\nmathematics, reading, science, and English language arts for students in\ngrades four (4) through twelve (12).\n(2) Every school -based decision mak ing council, or principal if none exists, shall\nestablish a policy that is consistent with any district plan adopted by a local board\nof education in accordance with KRS 158.6453(21) on the recruitment and\nassignment of students to advanced coursework opti ons in accordance with\nparagraph (b) of this subsection that recognizes that all students have the right to\nparticipate in a rigorous and academically challenging curriculum. The policy shall\nrequire that the school notifies all students, parents, and guardians of the:\n(a) Long-term benefits of student participation in advanced coursework; and\n(b) Advanced coursework opportunities available at the school.\n(3) Students shall be admitted to advanced coursework in accordance with the district\nplan adopted in accordance with KRS 158.6453(21).\n(4) Students that successfully complete high school advanced coursework shall receive\ncredit toward graduation in accordance with KRS 158.622(3).\n(5) Students enrolled in AP or IB courses in the public schools shall have the cost of\nthe examinations paid by the Kentucky Department of Education.","path":["KRS Chapter 160"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=56521","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:08Z","sha256":"1f55c92ef79720c7f3637b860803ad41b3c4a1f3ef3baab2e2fd5b708c5ca0ab","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-160.347","next":"us-ky/krs-160.350"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
