{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-161.010","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 161.010","heading":"Definitions for KRS 161.020 to 161.134.","body":"As used in KRS 161.020 to 161.134:\n(1) \"College or university work of graduate grade\" means academic preparation which\nextends beyond the usual four (4) year program of undergraduate studies leading to\na bachelor's degree and which is completed at a college or university accredited for\nthe graduate level;\n(2) \"Continuing education\" means study or other activities to provide professional\nimprovement and personal growth for certified teachers throughout their career. It\nmay include, but shall not be limited to, university courses, an advanced degr ee, or\na combination of field -based experience, individual research, and approved\nprofessional development activities, pursuant to KRS 156.095;\n(3) \"Professional certificate\" means the document issued to an applicant upon\ncompletion of an approved program of preparation and successful completion of the\nassessments in the area in which certification is being sought;\n(4) \"Provisional certificate\" means the document issued to an individual prior to the\nissuance of a professional certificate;\n(5) \"Standard coll ege or university\" means an institution accredited by the Southern\nAssociation of Colleges and Schools or by one of the other recognized regional\naccrediting agencies or by the Education Professional Standards Board;\n(6) \"Student teacher\" means an adult wh o has completed the prerequisite teacher\npreparation as prescribed by the accredited teacher education institution in which he\nor she is enrolled, and who is jointly assigned by the institution and a local school\ndistrict to engage in a period of practice teaching under the direction and\nsupervision of the administrative and teaching staff of the school district and the\ninstitution; and\n(7) \"Teacher's aide\" means an adult school employee who works under the direction of\nthe professional administrative and t eaching staff in performing, within the\nlimitations of his or her training and competency, certain instructional and\nnoninstructional functions in the school program including, but not limited to,\nclerical duties, tutoring individual pupils, leading pupils  in recreational activities,\nconducting pupils from place to place, assisting with classroom instruction as\ndirected by the teacher, aiding the school librarian, and preparing and organizing\ninstructional materials and equipment.","path":["KRS Chapter 161"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=55069","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:09Z","sha256":"fb016a7dd6825fb5be618cd8595f46533de08d8106a690ba29f33deddf94d972","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-160.991","next":"us-ky/krs-161.011"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
