{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-161.1211","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 161.1211","heading":"Classification of teachers.","body":"(1) The Education Professional Standards Board shall rank teachers as follows:\n(a) Rank I. Those holding regular certificates who have met the requirements\nfor Rank II and have additionally earned:\n1. A master's degree in a subject field approved by the Educat ion\nProfessional Standards Board or equivalent continuing education;\n2. Initial certification of the National Board for Professional Teaching\nStandards; or\n3. Thirty (30) additional semester hours of approved graduate work or\nequivalent continuing education.\nThe board shall not allow a teacher who qualified for Rank I status on the\nbasis of his or her national board certification to maintain that classification if\nthe national board certificate is revoked for misconduct or voided for other\nreasons.\n(b) Rank II. Those holding regular certificates and who:\n1. Have a master's degree in a subject field approved by the Education\nProfessional Standards Board;\n2. Have earned initial certification of the National Board for Professional\nTeaching Standards; or\n3. Have completed equivalent continuing education.\nThe board shall not allow a teacher who qualified for Rank II status on the\nbasis of his or her national board certification to maintain that classification if\nthe national board certificate is revoked for misc onduct or voided for other\nreasons.\n(c) Rank III. Those holding regular certificates and who have an approved four\n(4) year college degree or the equivalent.\n(d) Rank IV. Those holding emergency certificates and who have ninety-six (96)\nto one hundred twenty-eight (128) semester hours of approved college training\nor the equivalent.\n(e) Rank V. Those holding emergency certificates and who have sixty-four (64)\nto ninety -five (95) semester hours of approved college training or the\nequivalent.\n(2) In determining ranks, the Education Professional Standards Board shall classify\nteachers who hold valid certificates in the respective ranks according to approved\ncollege semester hour s of credit or equivalent continuing education. The board, in\ndefining preparation for certain types of vocational teachers as equivalent to college\ntraining, shall give consideration to apprenticeship training and industrial\nexperience.\n(3) For purposes o f the state salary schedule only as referenced in KRS 158.070, rank\nshall be determined on September 15 of each year.\n(4) Nothing in this section shall allow the Education Professional Standards Board by\nregulation to reclassify downward any teachers in Ranks II or I.","path":["KRS Chapter 161"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=50442","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:09Z","sha256":"4ff08c48b9b31bf5ee61013aa994d89cb235800870511fda6f77c5e18521ce05","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-161.121","next":"us-ky/krs-161.122"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
