{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-164.2808","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 164.2808","heading":"Center of American Civics -- Purposes -- Permissible actions by provost --","body":"Use of funds.\n(1) There is established a Center of American Civics at the University of Kentucky.\nThe board of trustees for the University of Kentucky may rename the center\nconsistent with its philanthropic naming governance procedures.\n(2) The center shall:\n(a) Foster a deeper understanding of the structures and institutions of federal,\nstate, and local government;\n(b) Further the understanding of the principles and p hilosophies that contributed\nto the foundation and development of the United States and the\nCommonwealth of Kentucky;\n(c) Promote civil discourse and constructive debate;\n(d) Enhance education in the fields of politics, economics, philosophy, law,\nAmerican history, American government, rule of law, and other related fields\nas appropriate, with a focus on the rights and responsibilities of American\ncitizenship; fundamental democratic principles; and the ways in which those\nprinciples are expressed in and thr ough our federal, state, and local\ninstitutions;\n(e) Provide nonpartisan resources to students, faculty, state government agencies,\neducators, and the general public regarding civic affairs;\n(f) Foster civic engagement through full and fair discussions tha t promote civil\ndialogue among those holding conflicting points of view; and\n(g) Assist in ensuring that the University of Kentucky serves as a robust\nmarketplace of ideas for all students and faculty.\n(3) In order to carry out the purposes set forth in su bsection (2) of this section, the\nprovost of the University of Kentucky may:\n(a) Name an executive director and otherwise establish governance structure for\nthe center;\n(b) Develop academic guidelines, course offerings, potential internships and other\nrelevant experiences for students and the general public;\n(c) Facilitate events, including sponsoring public lectures;\n(d) Develop a partnership between the center and the Patterson School of\nDiplomacy at the University of Kentucky; and\n(e) Take other actions as appropriate.\n(4) The center may be physically housed in the J. David Rosenber g College of Law on\nthe campus of the University of Kentucky.\n(5) The center shall operate as an independent academic unit within the University of\nKentucky.\n(6) Any funds appropriated to the center shall not supplant any existing state funding or\nprivate or external donations to the University of Kentucky.
