{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-164.2841","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 164.2841","heading":"Free tuition at state -supported school for survivor of police officer,","body":"firefighter, or volunteer firefighter killed in line of duty -- Free tuition at state-\nsupported school for survivor of other state -administered retirement system\nparticipants who died as a result of duty-related injury -- Limitation.\n(1) (a) Any person whose parent or any nonmarried widow or widower whose spouse\nwas a resident of the Commonwealth of Kentucky upon becoming a law\nenforcement officer, firefighter, or volunteer firefig hter and who was killed\nwhile in active service or training for active service or who died as a result of\na service-connected disability shall not be required to pay any matriculation or\ntuition fee upon admission to any state -supported university, communi ty\ncollege, or vocational training institution. The provisions of this subsection\nshall apply to any firefighter or volunteer firefighter who is killed or dies\nunder the conditions covered in this subsection on July 1, 1989, or thereafter.\n(b) In order to obtain the benefits conferred by paragraph (a) of this subsection,\nthe parent -child relationship shall be shown by birth certificate, adoption\npapers, or other documentary evidence. The spousal relationship shall be\nshown by a marriage certificate or other  documentary evidence. The parent's\nor spouse's service and the cause of death shall be evidenced by certification\nfrom the records of the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, the\nappropriate city or county law enforcement agency which employed the\ndeceased, the administrative agency for the fire department or fire protection\ndistrict recognized for funding under KRS 95A.262, or the administrative\nagency having jurisdiction over any paid firefighters of all counties and cities\nof all classes.\n(2) (a) Any person whose parent or any nonmarried widow or widower whose spouse\nwas an employee participating in a state -administered retirement system, and\nnot otherwise covered by subsection (1) of this section, and who died as a\nresult of a duty -related injury  as described in KRS 61.621 shall not be\nrequired to pay any matriculation or tuition fee upon admission to any state -\nsupported university, community college, or vocational training institution.\n(b) In order to obtain the benefits conferred by paragraph (a ) of this subsection,\nthe parent -child relationship shall be shown by birth certificate, adoption\npapers, or other documentary evidence. The spousal relationship shall be\nshown by a marriage certificate or other documentary evidence. The parent's\nor spouse's service and the cause of death shall be evidenced by certification\nfrom the records of the employing agency or the appropriate retirement\nsystem.\n(3) If one so admitted to a state -supported university, community college, or vocational\ntraining institution under the provisions of this section shall have obtained a cash\nscholarship paid or payable to the institution, from whatever source, the amount of\nthe scholarship shall be applied to the credit of the applicant in the payment of\nincidental expenses of his attendance at the institution, and any balance, if the terms\nof the scholarship permit, shall be returned to the applicant.","path":["KRS Chapter 164"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=4233","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:14Z","sha256":"a022c423c677cd1d665a63e72f288b5adafc8beeb60d7ddfa7725de195019d30","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-164.284","next":"us-ky/krs-164.2842"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
