{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-164.2865","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 164.2865","heading":"Legislative findings and declarations relating to meningococcal","body":"meningitis disease.\nThe General Assembly hereby finds and declares that:\n(1) Meningococcal meningitis disease is a potentially fatal infectious and contagious\nbacterial disease that can be spread by coughing and sharing drinking glasses;\n(2) Since the disease often presents itself with flu -like symptoms, many victims of the\ndisease die before it is even diagnosed. From 1991 to 1997, the cases of\nmeningococcal meningitis disease in young a dults fifteen (15) to twenty -four (24)\nyears of age nearly doubled;\n(3) Survivors of meningococcal meningitis disease may have severe after -effects of the\ndisease, including an intellectual disability, hearing loss, and loss of limbs;\n(4) College freshmen residing on campus in dormitories or residence halls have a risk\nof meningococcal meningitis disease over seven (7) times higher than do college\nstudents overall;\n(5) The meningococcal meningitis disease vaccine has been shown to be eighty -five\npercent (85%) to ninety percent (90%) effective in producing antibodies against the\nmost common strains of the disease; and\n(6) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that college\nfreshmen and their parents be educated about meningococcal meningitis disease and\nthat vaccination should be made easily available to freshmen and undergraduate\nstudents who want to reduce their risk of disease.","path":["KRS Chapter 164"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=4241","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:15Z","sha256":"e63693c1348a070ab8e6b92b7cefc9d62f709bcf606589acb9bc3efbfa8effa5","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-164.286","next":"us-ky/krs-164.2867"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
