{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-164.505","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 164.505","heading":"Exemption from matriculation or tuition fee of dependents, widow, or","body":"widower  of members  of the Armed  Forces or of members  of the National\nGuard  killed while  in  service  or  having  died  as  a  result of\nservice-connected disability.\n(1) A  person shall not be required to pay any matriculation or tuition fees upon\nadmission to any state-supported university, junior college, or vocational\ntraining institution if the person's deceased parent or stepparent, or if the\nperson's deceased spouse if the person has not remarried, was a resident of\nthe Commonwealth  of Kentucky upon joining the Kentucky National Guard or\nupon entering military service and:\n(a) Was  killed while serving in state active duty, active duty for training, or\ninactive duty training with the Kentucky National Guard, or while on active\nduty in the Armed  Forces of the United States, during a national\nemergency,  or wars declared by Congress, or actions of the United\nNations, or was killed by hostile fire while on active duty in the Armed\nForces of the United States or the Kentucky National Guard; or\n(b) Died as a result of a service-connected disability acquired while serving in\nstate active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training with the\nKentucky National Guard or Reserve Component, or while on active duty\nin the Armed Forces of the United States, during a national emergency, or\nwars declared by Congress, or actions of the United Nations.\n(2) In order to obtain the benefits conferred by subsection (1), the parent-child\nrelationship must be shown  by birth certificate, adoption papers, marriage\ncertificate, or other documentary evidence. A stepchild must have been a\nmember  of the veteran's household at the time of the veteran's death. The\nspousal  relationship must  be  shown  by a marriage certificate or other\ndocumentary  evidence. The parent's or spouse's service and the cause of\ndeath must be evidenced by certification from the records of the Kentucky\nDepartment of Military Affairs or the United States Department of Veterans\nAffairs Records, or the Department of Defense of the United States. In the\nevent one so admitted to a state-supported university, junior college, or\nvocational training institution under the provisions of this section shall have\nobtained a cash scholarship paid or payable to the institution, from whatever\nsource, the amount of the scholarship shall be applied to the credit of the\napplicant in the payment of incidental expenses of attendance at the institution,\nand any balance, if the terms of the scholarship permit, shall be returned to the\napplicant.","path":["KRS Chapter 164"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=45833","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:15Z","sha256":"e4ea954b3acd9e30755b50cb7c7a299a3724e1c3bcab29265bcc8fe1af7b10f5","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-164.500","next":"us-ky/krs-164.507"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
