{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-164.507","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 164.507","heading":"Exemption  from matriculation or tuition fee for deceased  veteran's","body":"spouse  or child under age 26.\n(1) The  nonremarried spouse, regardless of age, and any child, stepchild, or\norphan, under the age of twenty-six (26), of a deceased veteran shall not be\nrequired to pay any matriculation or tuition fees upon  admission to any\nstate-supported university, junior college, or vocational training institute for a\nperiod not in excess of forty-five (45) months in order to obtain a diploma, nor\nin excess of the lesser number  of months  required for a certificate of\ncompletion, if the deceased parent or spouse:\n(a) 1. Served in the Armed Forces of the United States during a national\nemergency, wars declared by Congress, or actions of the United\nNations; or\n2. Died while on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States\nregardless of wartime service; or\n3. Died as a result of a service-connected disability acquired while on\nactive duty with the Armed Forces of the United States regardless of\nwartime service; and\n(b) 1. Was  a resident of the Commonwealth  of Kentucky at the time of\ndeath; or\n2. Was  married to a resident of Kentucky at the time of death; and\n3. If discharged, was under honorable conditions.\n(2) In order to obtain the benefits conferred by subsection (1), the parent-child\nrelationship must be shown  by birth certificate, adoption papers, marriage\ncertificate, or other documentary evidence. A stepchild must have been a\nmember  of the veteran's household at the time of the veteran's death. The\nspousal  relationship must  be  shown  by a marriage certificate or other\ndocumentary  evidence. The parent's or spouse's service and the cause of\ndeath must be evidenced by certification from the records of the Kentucky\nDepartment of Military Affairs, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs\nRecords, or the Department of Defense of the United States. In the event one\nso admitted to a state-supported university, junior college, or vocational training\ninstitution under this section shall have obtained a cash scholarship paid or\npayable to the institution, from whatever source, the amount of the scholarship\nshall be applied to the credit of the applicant in the payment of incidental\nexpenses of attendance at the institution, and any balance, if the terms of the\nscholarship permit, shall be returned to the applicant.","path":["KRS Chapter 164"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=45834","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:15Z","sha256":"a9a744265a32f896b77a5adf5e21be3a63db3f885dc74560db3151582b5dce36","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-164.505","next":"us-ky/krs-164.510"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
