{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-164a.250","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 164A.250","heading":"Student loan forgiveness program for graduates in energy-related fields.","body":"(1) It is the intent of the General Assembly to establish a student loan forgiveness\nprogram for individuals who receive a bachelor's degree or graduate degree from a\nKentucky college or university after August 30, 2007, and who are employed in an\nenergy-related field as engineers, engineering technologists, chemists, geologists, or\nhydrologists in Kentucky. The loan forgiveness program shall be funded by the\nCommonwealth of Kentucky using state appropriations and shall be administered\nby the Kentucky Highe r Education Student Loan Corporation. All costs associated\nwith the program shall be paid for by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, including\nthe reimbursement of any expenses incurred by the corporation in its administration\nof the program.\n(2) To the extent f unds are available, the corporation shall provide eligible individuals\nforgiveness of loans within the Federal Family Education Loan Program held by the\ncorporation up to a maximum of:\n(a) Twenty percent (20%) of the loan balance principal; and\n(b) Accrued interest;\nfor each year of qualified employment in Kentucky after August 30, 2007, in an\neligible occupation as set forth in subsection (4) of this section.\n(3) An individual shall be eligible for the loan forgiveness if he or she:\n(a) Is a Kentucky resi dent, as determined by the corporation using the criteria\nestablished by the Council on Postsecondary Education for the purposes of\npostsecondary admission and tuition assessment;\n(b) Is a citizen of the United States;\n(c) Received a bachelor's degree or graduate degree after August 30, 2007, from a\npostsecondary education institution in Kentucky that is accredited by a\nregional or national accrediting association; and\n(d) Is employed full -time in Kentucky in an eligible occupation as set forth in\nsubsection (4) of this section.\n(4) Qualified employment in an eligible occupation shall be employment in an energy -\nrelated field as an engineer, including environmental engineer; engineering\ntechnologist, including environmental engineering technologist; chemist; geologist;\nor hydrologist. The corporation shall establish the specific eligible occupational\ntitles within the eligible occupations set forth in this subsection through the\npromulgation of administrative regulations using the Standard Occupational\nClassification System of the Bureau of Labor Statistics within the U.S. Department\nof Labor. The corporation shall consult with the Council on Postsecondary\nEducation in determining eligible occupational titles.\n(5) The corporation shall promulgate administrative  regulations in accordance with\nKRS Chapter 13A as may be needed for the administration of the loan forgiveness\nprogram.","path":["KRS Chapter 164A"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=4555","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:19Z","sha256":"22be046865e96bc98d4583bef1a3546ed057884c1cb7569c5e4c77b657feefa9","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-164a.240","next":"us-ky/krs-164a.260"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
