{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-17.460","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 17.460","heading":"Procedure by law enforcement agency upon receipt of report of missing","body":"child -- Transportation and return of child once located.\n(1) Upon notification by a parent, guardian, person exercising custodial control or\nsupervision, or the authorized represent ative of the Department for Community\nBased Services of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services if the child is a ward\nof the state, that a child is missing, the law enforcement agency receiving\nnotification shall immediately complete a missing person's  report in a form\nprescribed by the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet which shall include information\nthe Justice and Public Safety Cabinet deems necessary for the identification of the\nmissing child, including the child's physical description, last known location, and\nknown associates.\n(2) Within twenty-four (24) hours after completion of the missing person's report form,\nthe law enforcement agency shall transmit the report for inclusion within the\nKentucky Missing Child Information Center computer and sha ll cause the report to\nbe entered into the National Crime Information Center computer.\n(3) Within twenty -four (24) hours thereafter, the law enforcement agency shall\ninvestigate the report, shall inform all appropriate law enforcement officers of the\nexistence of the missing child report, and shall communicate the report to every\nother law enforcement agency having jurisdiction in the area.\n(4) (a) Upon location of the missing child and verification of the National Crime\nInformation Center entry, the law enforcement agency shall transport the child\nto the parent, guardian, or person exercising custodial control or supervision.\n(b) If the child is a ward of the state, the law enforcement agency shall transport\nthe child to the authorized representative of the  Department for Community\nBased Services of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services in the\njurisdiction of the law enforcement agency.\n(c) If the law enforcement agency is unable to return the child to the appropriate\ncaretaker pursuant to paragraph (a)  of this subsection, the law enforcement\nagency shall contact the court -designated worker with jurisdiction for\nplacement determination.\n(d) If the child is in custody on a charge of committing an offense pursuant to\nKRS Chapters 600 to 645, the law enforc ement agency shall proceed\naccording to the provisions therein.\n(5) Within twenty-four (24) hours after a missing child is located and returned to the\nappropriate caretaker pursuant to subsection (4) of this section, the law enforcement\nagency which transported, found, or returned the missing child shall notify both the\nMissing Child Information Center and the National Crime Information Center of\nthat fact.","path":["KRS Chapter 17"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=1247","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:48:38Z","sha256":"df36c2662a6629f23cc19015a0b76e8120f064d3e4e337054341dd6e3414c673","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-17.450","next":"us-ky/krs-17.470"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
