{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-171.140","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 171.140","heading":"General powers and duties.","body":"(1) The department shall give assistance and advice to all state institutional and public\nlibraries, and to all counties in the state which propose to establish public libraries,\nas to the best means of their establishment and operation and may send any of its\nmembers to aid in organizing such libraries or assist in the improvement of those\nalready established.\n(2) It may receive gifts which may be used or held for the purpose given, and may\npurchase and operate traveling libraries under such conditions and rul es as it thinks\nnecessary to protect the interests of the state and best increase the efficiency of its\nservice to the public.\n(3) The department may issue printed material, such as lists and circulars of\ninformation, and in the publication thereof may coo perate with other state library\ncommissions and libraries, in order to secure the more economical administration of\nthe work for which it was formed. It may provide for library educational\nopportunities in various parts of the state.\n(4) The department sha ll perform such other service in behalf of public libraries as it\nconsiders for the best interests of the state.\n(5) The department shall maintain a strong central collection of library materials in a\nvariety of formats and assure access to those materials  and to other information\nresources throughout the state and nation for the purposes of providing information\nand reference services to state government agencies and of supplementing the\nresources of local libraries.","path":["KRS Chapter 171"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=4757","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:21Z","sha256":"eb3728dd3b84891c5b0e2a5a20b9416fef3ba98468c6cbcb53dd41ee8a261cc5","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-171.130","next":"us-ky/krs-171.145"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
