{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-177.073","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 177.073","heading":"Official signs and notices as to scenic and historical attractions.","body":"The Department of Highways shall erect within six hundred and sixty (660) feet of the\nright-of-way of any interstate, limited access highway, federal -aid primary highway, or\nturnpikes official directional signs and notices pertaining to publicly and privat ely owned\nnatural wonders and scenic and historical attractions, including cultural, scientific,\neducational, and religious sites, and areas of natural scenic beauty or naturally suited for\noutdoor recreation deemed to be in the interest of the traveling public under the following\nconditions:\n(1) Such signs shall not violate any federal law, rule, or regulation, nor exceed any\nstandards of size, lighting, spacing, and message content as may be promulgated\nfrom time to time by the secretary of the United Sta tes Department of\nTransportation under subsection (c) of Section 131 of Title 23 of the United States\nCode affecting the allocation of federal funds to the Commonwealth of Kentucky.\n(2) Such signs and notices shall not violate any safety standards set fort h in KRS\n177.830 to 177.890 nor any regulation promulgated by the commissioner of\nhighways pursuant to KRS 177.860.\n(3) The message content on such signs and notices shall be limited to the identification\nby name of the attraction or activity and direction al information useful to the\ntraveler in locating the attraction, such as mileage, route numbers, or exit numbers.\nDescriptive words or phrases, and pictorial or photographic representations of the\nactivity or its environs are prohibited.\n(4) The commissio ner of highways shall promulgate by regulations specific selection\nmethods and criteria to be used in determining those sites and attractions, publicly\nand privately owned, for which directional signs and notices may be erected as\npermitted by subsection ( c) of Section 131 of Title 23, United States Code. A\nstatement as to selection methods, criteria, and standards of size, lighting, and\nspacing shall be furnished to the secretary of the United States Department of\nTransportation before the Department of Highways erects any such directional signs\nand notices. The commissioner shall consider and determine, upon proper\napplication to the Department of Highways, those sites and attractions eligible for\nofficial directional signs and notices.\n(5) The Department of Highways shall require reimbursement for the cost of erection\nand maintenance of official directional signs and notices authorized by this section\nwhen such sites or attractions are privately owned and shall prescribe the size,\nnumber, and locations of such signs and notices based upon its determination of the\ntraveler's need for information.\n(6) The commissioner of highways shall promulgate such reasonable rules and\nregulations necessary to carry out the provisions of this section.","path":["KRS Chapter 177"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=5255","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:28Z","sha256":"0413148a7e5de1a9cf27bfa9d85fa49ad485fccc195d81c5737d1e1521c36c99","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-177.072","next":"us-ky/krs-177.0734"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
