{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-179.020","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 179.020","heading":"County road engineer or supervisor.","body":"(1) The county judge/executive of each county, with the consent of the fiscal court, may\nemploy a county road engineer. Any person so employed shall be either a civil or\nhighway engineer licensed in accordance with KRS Chapter 322, or a person who\nsuccessfully passed an examination for county road engineer under this section prior\nto March 24, 1950, and who qualified and served as such.\n(2) If the fiscal court does not provide for a county road engineer, the duties of the\ncounty road engineer, except insofar as  they may be in conflict with the provisions\nof KRS Chapter 322, shall be performed by a county road supervisor, who shall be\nemployed by the county judge/executive with the consent of the fiscal court, and\nwho may be removed in the same manner provided fo r county road engineers. No\nperson shall be employed as county road supervisor unless he meets the following\nrequirements:\n(a) He has at least three (3) years' practical road building experience of a nature\nsatisfactory to examining authorities selected by  the Department of Highways\nfor the Commonwealth of Kentucky; and\n(b) He has passed an examination, either oral or written, or both, given by the\nexamining authorities, and has received a certificate of qualification from the\nauthorities.\n(3) The county su rveyor may be employed as county road engineer, if qualified under\nsubsection (1) of this section, or as county road supervisor if qualified under\nsubsection (2) of this section, and for his services as engineer or supervisor he shall\nreceive a salary in a ddition to fees allowed by law for his services as county\nsurveyor.\n(4) When no qualified applicant who is acceptable to the fiscal court is available for\nemployment, the county judge/executive, with the consent of the fiscal court, may\nemploy a temporary supervisor not qualified under subsection (2) of this section for\na period of three (3) months, but in no event shall a temporary supervisor be used\nfor more than three (3) months during any one (1) term of a county judge/executive.\n(5) This section shall not be construed to prohibit the supervision of the construction\nand maintenance of roads, without additional compensation, by the county\njudge/executive, or by committees of the fiscal court, in counties where the position\nof road engineer or road supervisor has not been established by the fiscal court.\n(6) Two (2) or more counties, by a contract approved by order of the fiscal court of\neach of the counties, may authorize the county judges/executive of the contracting\ncounties to employ the same employee a s county road engineer or county road\nsupervisor to serve in all counties so contracting, and for the apportionment of the\namount of his salary to be paid by each county.\n(7) The period of employment for any county road engineer or county road supervisor\nshall be two (2) or four (4) years, in the discretion of the fiscal court, beginning with\nthe second Tuesday in January of an odd -numbered year. Other terms of\nemployment, and the salaries of all persons employed under the provisions of this\nsection, shall be fixed by the fiscal court.\n(8) Those persons serving as a county road engineer or supervisor on July 15, 1998,\nshall continue to serve in that capacity until the second Tuesday in January of 1999,\nat which time the position of county road engineer or su pervisor shall be\nreappointed for a period of employment as provided in subsection (7) of this\nsection.","path":["KRS Chapter 179"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=5473","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:30Z","sha256":"22d92b03e43c7621796f03ae88b42a3ee6f509fdf66dd9a9c49ac8fb60f56adc","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-179.010","next":"us-ky/krs-179.030"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
