{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-186.060","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 186.060","heading":"Motor vehicles leased or owned by governmental units or emergency and","body":"ambulance vehicles operated by nonprofit corporations organized by units of\ngovernment -- Use of official plates on motor vehicles leased by governmental\nentity.\n(1) Applications for registration of motor vehicles leased or owned by a county, city,\nurban-county, or board of education, or emergency and ambulance vehicles\noperated by nonprofit corporations organized by units of government in the state or\nby the state or federal government shall be submitted to the county clerk, who shall\nenter the application into AVIS and issue a registration receipt and the official\nlicense plate described in KRS 186.240. If the cabinet subsequently determines the\nregistration should not have processed under this section, it may revoke the\nregistration. For providing the services, the entity requesting the registration under\nthis section shall pay the fees described in KRS 186.040.\n(2) After the issuance of a license plate under subsection  (1) of this section, no\nsubsequent registration or renewal shall be necessary so long as the vehicle is\nleased or owned by the governmental unit, except in the case of loss or destruction\nof the license plate. In the event of loss or destruction of the li cense plate, the\nlicense plate shall be replaced in the same manner as if no plate had ever been\nissued.\n(3) When a motor vehicle leased or owned by an entity allowed to use an official plate\nunder this section is transferred or sold to another governmenta l unit, a new license\nplate shall be issued for the vehicle in the same manner as provided for in\nsubsection (1) of this section and shall have the same effect as given to such license\nplates in subsection (2) of this section.\n(4) A person shall not use an y license plate that has been issued for use on a motor\nvehicle leased or owned by a governmental unit on a motor vehicle that is not\nleased or owned by an entity allowed to use an official plate under this section.\n(5) Notwithstanding the provisions of KR S 186.020 and 186.050, a governmental\nentity which leases a motor vehicle may have that vehicle equipped with an official\nplate under this section. Upon termination of the lease agreement, if ownership of\nthe motor vehicle does not revert to an entity allo wed to use an official plate under\nthis section, the owner of the motor vehicle shall surrender the official plates and\napply for registration under the provisions of KRS 186.050.","path":["KRS Chapter 186"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=55045","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:36Z","sha256":"77b766e3b96aad7f92790326089614212dbfbdd87682fb74a483ccc68c98a9df","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-186.059","next":"us-ky/krs-186.061"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
