{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-186.061","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 186.061","heading":"Motor vehicles owned by nonprofit volunteer fire department, volunteer","body":"fire prevention unit, or volunteer fire protection unit.      (Effective until\nJanuary 1, 2027)\n(1) Applications for registration of motor vehicles owned exclusively by any no nprofit\nvolunteer fire department, volunteer fire prevention unit, or volunteer fire protection\nunit shall be accompanied by a statement from the chief or assistant chief of the\nvolunteer fire department or unit that owns the motor vehicle, certifying that  the\nmotor vehicle is exclusively owned and operated by the volunteer fire department\nor unit. The application and statement shall be forwarded by the county clerk to the\ncabinet, which shall give special authority to the clerk to register it. Upon receivi ng\nthat authority, the clerk shall issue a registration receipt and the official number\nplate described in KRS 186.240(6), and report the registration to the head of the\ncabinet authorizing the registration. For his services in issuing such certificate of\nregistration and number plate and reporting the same, the county clerk shall be\nentitled to a fee of three dollars ($3) in each instance, to be paid by the volunteer\nfire department or unit.\n(2) After registration of any vehicle owned exclusively by any no nprofit volunteer fire\ndepartment, volunteer fire prevention unit, or volunteer fire protection unit and after\nissuance of a number plate for the vehicle so owned, no subsequent registration or\nrenewal of same, and no subsequent renewal of a number plate o f the vehicle shall\nbe necessary so long as the vehicle is owned exclusively by the volunteer fire\ndepartment or unit except in the case of loss or destruction of the license plate. In\nthe event of loss or destruction, the number plate shall be replaced in  the same\nmanner as if no plate had ever been issued.\n(3) When a motor vehicle owned exclusively by any nonprofit volunteer fire\ndepartment, volunteer fire prevention unit, or volunteer fire protection unit is\ntransferred or sold to another nonprofit volun teer fire department, volunteer fire\nprevention unit, or volunteer fire protection unit or another governmental unit a new\nlicense plate shall be issued for the vehicle in the same manner as provided for in\nsubsection (1) of this section and shall have the  same effect as given to such license\nplates in subsection (2) of this section.\n(4) No person shall use on a motor vehicle, not exclusively owned by any nonprofit\nvolunteer fire department, volunteer fire prevention unit, or volunteer fire protection\nunit, any license plate that has been issued for use on a motor vehicle owned by a\nvolunteer fire department or unit.\nEffective: June 29, 2021","path":["KRS Chapter 186"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=51010","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:36Z","sha256":"220a7e1fc0e06133ec8b60f59ba8856383b81f0436207f8ac0051400358fd613","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-186.060","next":"us-ky/krs-186.065"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
