{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-186.072","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 186.072","heading":"Commercial motor vehicle temporary registration placard -- Application","body":"process -- Uses -- Record of use -- Activation.\n(1) For the purposes of this section, \"motor truck\" and \"truck tractor\" shall have the\nsame meaning as established in KRS 189.010.\n(2) Any manufacturer, dealer, or distributor engaged in the business of manufacturing,\nselling, or customizing truck tractors or motor trucks may obtain a commercial\nmotor vehicle temporary registration placard from the Department of Vehicle\nRegulation. The fee for each placard shall be one hundred dollars ($100) per placard\nand each applicant shall specify the number of placards to be issued. A company\nmay make additional requests for temporary placards at any time it exhausts the\nplacards supplied by the department.\n(3) The commissioner shall prescribe the application form for the commercial vehicle\ntemporary registration placard, require each applicant to submit proof of eligibility\nto receive the placard, and certify that the applicant has need of the pla card in the\nordinary course of business, and may request other information as part of the\napplication process.\n(4) The commercial vehicle temporary registration placard shall be placed on a truck\ntractor or motor truck in the same manner as a regular licen se plate. The temporary\nplacard shall be issued if a permanent registration issued pursuant to KRS 186.050\nor temporary registration issued pursuant to KRS 186A.100 cannot be obtained.\n(5) The use of a commercial vehicle temporary placard shall be limited to the following\nactivities:\n(a) A demonstration of the truck tractor or motor truck to a prospective purchaser;\n(b) The transportation of the truck tractor or motor truck to a facility engaged in\nthe customizing of a motor vehicle for eventual use on the highway;\n(c) The transportation of the truck tractor or motor truck to a trade show or other\nactivity designed to promote the selling of the product; or\n(d) The transportation of the truck tractor or motor truck by a purchaser to a\nlocation outside Kentucky, provided that the truck tractor or motor truck is not\neligible to be registered in Kentucky.\n(6) Each manufacturer, dealer, or distributor receiving the temporary placards shall\nmaintain a record of use for each temporary placard to include the following:\n(a) The make and model of each motor vehicle and the vehicle identification\nnumber or other identification number of each vehicle on which a placard is\nused;\n(b) The date the placard was issued and the registration number of the placard;\n(c) The address  of the final destination and reason for movement of the truck\ntractor or motor truck receiving the temporary placard; and\n(d) A record of insurance coverage or a binder for insurance coverage issued to\nthe recipient of the temporary placard.\n(7) A commercial vehicle temporary placard shall not be activated until it is placed\nupon the truck tractor or motor truck and used in a manner as authorized by\nsubsection (5) of this section. The commercial vehicle temporary placard shall\nexpire thirty (30) d ays after it is activated and placed in use on a truck tractor or\nmotor truck and shall be designed in a manner that an expiration date shall be noted\nclearly on the face of the placard.","path":["KRS Chapter 186"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=5949","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:37Z","sha256":"a0c25a47763fe1e6b78c3685bbccc0ff67cb4c43baf83eac0de2657643170d92","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-186.070","next":"us-ky/krs-186.073"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
