{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-186.073","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 186.073","heading":"Commercial trailer temporary registration placard -- Application process -","body":"- Uses -- Record of use -- Activation.\n(1) For the purposes of this section, \"semitrailer\" and \"trailer\" shall have the same\nmeaning as established in KRS 186.650.\n(2) Any manufacturer, dealer, or distributor engaged in the business of manufacturing,\nselling, or customizing commercial semitrailers or commercial trailers may obtain a\ncommercial trailer temporary registration placard from the Department of Vehicle\nRegulation. The fee for each placard shall be five dollars ($5) per placard and each\napplicant shall specify the number of placards to be issued. A company may make\nadditional requests for temporary placards at any time it exhausts the placards\nsupplied by the department.\n(3) The commissioner shall prescribe the application form for the commercial trailer\ntemporary registration placard, require each applicant to submit proof of eligibility\nto receive the placard, and certify that the applicant has need of the placard in the\nordinary course of business, and may request other information as part of the\napplication process.\n(4) The commercial trailer temporary registration placard shall be placed on a\nsemitrailer or trailer in the same manner as a regular trailer license plate.  The\ntemporary placard shall be issued if a permanent registration issued pursuant to\nKRS 186.655 cannot be obtained.\n(5) The use of a commercial trailer temporary registration placard shall be limited to the\nfollowing activities:\n(a) A demonstration of the semitrailer or trailer to a prospective purchaser;\n(b) The transportation of the semitrailer or trailer to a facility engaged in the\ncustomizing of a motor vehicle for eventual use on the highway;\n(c) The transportation of the semitrailer or trailer to a  trade show or other activity\ndesigned to promote the selling of the product;\n(d) The transportation of the semitrailer or trailer by a purchaser to a location\noutside Kentucky, provided that the semitrailer or trailer is not eligible to be\nregistered in Kentucky; or\n(e) Transportation of a trailer or semitrailer from the manufacturer to a place of\nbusiness in Kentucky in order to obtain a permanent registration issued\npursuant to KRS 186.655.\n(6) Each manufacturer, dealer, or distributor receiving the temp orary placards shall\nmaintain a record of use for each temporary placard to include the following:\n(a) The make and model of each semitrailer or trailer and the vehicle\nidentification number or other identification number of each vehicle on which\na placard is used;\n(b) The date the placard was issued and the registration number of the placard;\nand\n(c) The address of the final destination and reason for movement of the\nsemitrailer or trailer receiving the temporary placard.\n(7) A commercial trailer temporary registration placard shall not be activated until it is\nplaced upon the semitrailer or trailer and used in a manner as authorized by\nsubsection (5) of this section. The commercial trailer temporary registration placard\nshall expire thirty (30) days after it is activated and placed in use on a semitrailer or\ntrailer and shall be designed in a manner that an expiration date shall be noted\nclearly on the face of the placard.","path":["KRS Chapter 186"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=5950","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:37Z","sha256":"f09733a5206f9ce46245b1ad9b59e4d1268fe60e541ccf734b3947aee987a0ea","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-186.072","next":"us-ky/krs-186.074"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
