{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-186.165","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 186.165","heading":"Exchange of one special license plate for another -- Transfer of special","body":"license plate to another vehicle.\n(1) As used in this section, \"owner\" means a person who has purchased or leased a\nmotor vehicle that is registered under the provisions of KRS 186.050(1) or (3)(a).\n(2) The provisions of this chapter relating to special license plates to the contrary\nnotwithstanding, if a vehicle has been issued a special license plate and the owner\nof the vehicle wishes to surrender the plate and exchange it fo r a different special\nlicense plate, the owner may, at the time he or she renews the vehicle's annual\nregistration, exchange the special plate without being required to obtain a regular\nregistration plate.\n(3) An owner requesting to exchange a special lice nse plate shall be required to\nsurrender the special license plate issued to the vehicle and the appropriate\ncertificate of registration to the county clerk of the county where the person lives.\nUpon payment of the fee established in subsection (4) of this  section, the county\nclerk shall immediately exchange the special license plate and issue a new special\nlicense plate and certificate of registration without placing further requirements\nupon the owner.\n(4) The fee to exchange a special license plate under  this section shall be the fee\ncharged under this chapter for the particular special license plate which is being\nrequested.\n(5) If a motor vehicle that has been issued a special license plate is sold prior to the\nexpiration of the registration, the owner may, pursuant to KRS 186.190, transfer the\nplate to another vehicle the owner has obtained.","path":["KRS Chapter 186"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=39946","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:37Z","sha256":"c5ea25cd576f6b1d6455b0549acbcdbb232ebacf7414cc7b61399fe90cb8c843","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-186.164","next":"us-ky/krs-186.166"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
