{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-186.170","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 186.170","heading":"Retention of receipt -- Display of registration plates -- Registration years.","body":"(1) (a) Except as provided in this subsection and KRS 186A.127 and 186.045, the\nowner shall have the receipt issued by the cabinet through the county clerk\nconstantly in his possession, and shall display the registration plate\nconspicuously upon the rear of the motor vehicle, except that the registration\nplate upon a semitrailer-tractor shall be displayed upon the front of the tractor.\n(b) The owner's copy, o r a reproduced copy thereof, of the registration receipt of\nevery motor vehicle, except motorcycles, licensed under KRS 186.050 shall\nbe kept in the vehicle at all times and shall be available for inspection.\n(c) Plates shall be kept legible at all times a nd the rear plate shall be illuminated\nwhen being operated during the hours designated in KRS 189.030. No rim,\nframe, or other covering around the plate shall in any way obscure or cover\nany lettering or decal on the plate.\n(d) If the cabinet has prescribe d that plates shall continue in use, it shall each\nyear, in addition to the registration receipt, select and give to the owner as\nfurther evidence of registration some insignia which may conveniently be\nattached permanently and conspicuously to the motor v ehicle during each\nregistration year. It shall be the duty of the owner to attach the insignia in the\nprescribed manner and no person may operate a motor vehicle unless the\ninsignia is affixed upon it. The cabinet shall have placed on the insignia either\nfigures, letters, writing, marks, or a combination thereof, which indicate that\nthe motor vehicle has been registered and which in conjunction with the\nrecords of the cabinet make identity of the registrant readily ascertainable.\n(2) The registration year f or commercial vehicles, trailers, semitrailers, mobile homes,\nand recreational vehicles shall be from April 1 to March 31.\n(3) At the discretion of the vehicle owner, the title to a motor vehicle may be held in\nthe system and subsequently printed and mailed to the owner at the owner's request.","path":["KRS Chapter 186"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=57814","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:37Z","sha256":"e5fe516593392e4d3315884ef64bfac92c92c06cade56686fcf40b9ab3296ee9","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-186.168","next":"us-ky/krs-186.1701"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
