{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-186.174","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 186.174","heading":"Personalized license plates.","body":"(1) For purposes of this section, \"personalized license plate\" means a license plate\nmanufactured by the cabinet upon an applicant's request with specific letters or\nnumbers or combinations of letters and numbers significant to the applicant.\n(2) Any owner or lessee of a motor vehicle or recreational vehicle that is required to be\nregistered under the provisions of KRS 186.050(1), (3)(a), (4)(a), or (11), or any\nowner or lessee of a motorcycle required to be registered under the provisions of\nKRS 186.050(2) may  obtain a personalized license plate by submitting an\napplication through a website designated by the cabinet. The cabinet shall produce\nthe requested license plate upon approval and receipt of the fee required in\nsubsection (4) of this section for a speci al license plate, or the fee required in KRS\n186.162 for a standard issue license plate.\n(3) Personalized license plates shall expire on the last day of the birth month of the\nperson to whom the license plate is registered.\n(4) (a) A personalized license plate shall be replaced on the same schedule as regular\nissue license plates unless it is damaged or unreadable.\n(b) A standard issued license plate may be personalized:\n1. For the fee established in KRS 186.162(2)(m) for a motor vehicle that is\nrequired to be registered under the provisions of KRS 186.050(1), (3)(a),\nor (4)(a), or a motorcycle required to be registered under the provisions\nof KRS 186.050(2); or\n2. For the fee established in KRS 186.162(2)(ad) for a recreational vehicle\nthat is required to b e registered under the provisions of KRS\n186.050(11).\n(c) Any special license plate may be combined with a personalized license plate\nfor a twenty -five dollar ($25) state fee in addition to all other fees for the\nparticular special license plate established in this section and in KRS 186.164.\nThe twenty -five dollar ($25) fee required under this paragraph shall be\ndivided between the cabinet and the cou nty clerk of the county where the\napplicant resides with the cabinet receiving twenty dollars ($20) and the\ncounty clerk receiving five dollars ($5).\n(5) (a) A personalized plate shall not be issued that would conflict with or duplicate\nany current issued license plate.\n(b) A personalized plate shall not be issued if the cabinet determines:\n1. The message to be placed on the license plate, if created, discriminates\nagainst a race, color, religion, sex, or national origin;\n2. The plate message is the name of  a trademarked or copyrighted product\nor brand name; or\n3. The plate's lettering or message is obscene or profane, as determined by\nthe cabinet.\n(c) Once an applicant obtains a personalized plate, he or she will have first\npriority on that plate for each o f the following years that he or she makes\ntimely renewal payments.","path":["KRS Chapter 186"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=55748","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:37Z","sha256":"ab40f0a69c8b91f2f2d453b2ea5df53ee25a77e926f994ea00e7301f6f267d27","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-186.1733","next":"us-ky/krs-186.175"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
