{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-186.480","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 186.480","heading":"Examination of applicants by Department of Kentucky State Police --","body":"Vision test to be administered in compliance with KRS 186.577 -- Exemptions -\n- Road skills test.\n(1) The Department of Kentucky State Police shall examine every app licant for an\noperator's license as identified in KRS 186.635, except as otherwise provided in this\nsection. The examination shall be held in the county where the applicant resides\nunless:\n(a) The applicant is granted written permission by the Transportati on Cabinet to\ntake the examination in another county; or\n(b) The applicant is tested using a bioptic telescopic device.\n(2) The examination shall include a test of the applicant's eyesight to ensure\ncompliance with the visual acuity and visual field standa rds set forth in KRS\n186.577. The vision testing outlined in this subsection shall be administered under\nthe provisions established in KRS 186.577 at, or prior to, the time of application.\nThe examination shall also include a test of the applicant's abilit y to read and\nunderstand highway signs regulating, warning, and directing traffic, the applicant's\nknowledge of traffic laws, and an actual demonstration of the applicant's ability to\nexercise ordinary and reasonable control in the operation of a motor veh icle. The\nprovisions of this subsection shall not apply to an applicant who:\n(a) At the time of application, holds a valid operator's license from another state,\nprovided that state affords a reciprocal exemption to a Kentucky resident;\n(b) At the time of application for a motorcycle instruction permit or motorcycle\noperator's license, presents evidence of successful completion of an approved\nrider training course under KRS 176.5062; or\n(c) Is a citizen of the Commonwealth who has been serving in the United  States\nmilitary and has allowed his or her operator's license to expire.\n(3) In addition to the requirements of subsection (2) of this section, an applicant for a\nmotorcycle operator's license who does not present evidence of successful\ncompletion of an a pproved rider training course under KRS 176.5062 shall be\nrequired to show his or her ability to operate a motorcycle. An applicant who\nsuccessfully completes the skills portion of the test under this subsection on a:\n(a) Three (3) wheeled motorcycle shall  be issued a motorcycle operator's license\nrestricted to the operation of three (3) wheeled motorcycles under KRS\n186.447; or\n(b) Two (2) wheeled motorcycle shall be issued a motorcycle operator's license\nwithout the restriction identified in KRS 186.447, and may operate both two\n(2) and three (3) wheeled motorcycles.\n(4) Any person whose intermediate license or operator's license is denied, suspended,\nor revoked for cause shall apply for reinstatement at the termination of the period\nfor which the license was denied, suspended, or revoked by submitting to the\nexamination. The provisions of this subsection shall not apply to any person whose\nlicense was suspended for failure to meet the conditions described in KRS 186.411\nwhen, within one (1) year of suspension, the driving privileges of the person are\nreinstated.\n(5) An applicant shall not use an autocycle for road skills testing administered under\nthe provisions of this section.\n(6) The Department of Kentucky State Police shall include, in the educational materials\nit produces for prospective drivers, information about the purposes, processes, and\nbenefits of the organ donation program.","path":["KRS Chapter 186"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=55548","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:38Z","sha256":"598395a2e0e08c0acdf94aad2865b98eeaf0f2ffca402dc03e1d77391545ec97","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-186.470","next":"us-ky/krs-186.490"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
