{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-186.752","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 186.752","heading":"Safety inspection required for vehicles converted to the use of natural gas","body":"after January 1, 2013 -- Certification to owner and cabinet -- Administrative\nregulations -- Directions to cabinet.\n(1) The owner of a motor vehicle that has been converted after January 1, 2013, to\noperate on either CNG or LNG alone or in a bi -fuel system shall have the motor\nvehicle inspected to ascertain compliance with relevant federal safety standards\ncovering the use of these fuels. The safety inspection shall occur:\n(a) At the time of the conversion;\n(b) Every three (3) years or thirty -six thousand (36,000) miles after the\nconversion, whichever occurs first; and\n(c) Following any collision in which any vehicle involved is traveling at five (5)\nmiles per hour or greater.\n(2) The owner of a motor vehicle originally designed and manufactured to use\ncompressed or liquid natural gas as a fuel shall have it inspected for safety\nfollowing any collision in which any vehicle involved is traveling at five (5) miles\nper hour or greater.\n(3) A person who performs the conversion of a motor vehicle to operate on either CNG\nor LNG alone or in a bi -fuel system shall certify to the owner of the motor vehicle\nand the cabinet that the conversion does not tamper with, circumvent, or otherwis e\naffect any existing motor vehicle emissions or diagnostic systems, except as\nnecessary to complete the conversion.\n(4) The cabinet may promulgate administrative regulations pursuant to KRS Chapter\n13A to carry out the provisions of this section to:\n(a) Qualify persons to perform safety inspections on converted motor vehicles;\n(b) Modify or adopt for state use any federal safety standards, if necessary; and\n(c) Identify motor vehicles that have been converted to operate on clean\ntransportation fuels and en sure compliance with the safety, emissions, and\nefficiency requirements of this section and applicable administrative\nregulations.\n(5) In promulgating administrative regulations, the cabinet shall consider:\n(a) Directing that inspections use equipment whic h is widely available in the\nstate; and\n(b) Creating a regulatory framework that encourages the conversion and sale of\nmotor vehicles that operate on CNG, LNG, or a bi-fuel system.","path":["KRS Chapter 186"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=42403","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:39Z","sha256":"4f6e5c5abb8ba852ae6def1ca366c3326ed429689369be84d9708b244e37730b","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-186.750","next":"us-ky/krs-186.760"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
