{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-186.760","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 186.760","heading":"Definitions for KRS 186.760 to 186.779.","body":"As used in KRS 186.760 to 186.779:\n(1) \"Automated driving system\" means hardware and software that are collectively\ncapable of performing the entire dynamic driving task on a sustained basis,\nregardless of whether it is limited to a specific operational design domain;\n(2) \"Dynamic driving task\" or \"DDT\":\n(a) Means all of the real -time operational and tactical functions required to\noperate a vehicle in on-road traffic, including without limitation:\n1. Lateral vehicle motion control via steering;\n2. Longitudinal motion control via acceleration and deceleration;\n3. Monitoring the driving environment via object and event detection,\nrecognition, classification, and response preparation;\n4. Object and event response execution;\n5. Maneuver planning; and\n6. Enhancing conspicuity via lighting, signaling, and gesturing; and\n(b) Does not include strategic functions such as trip scheduling and the selection\nof destinations and waypoints;\n(3) \"DDT fallback\" means the response by:\n(a) The person or human driver to either perform the DDT or achieve a minimal\nrisk condition after occurrence of a DDT performance relevant system failure,\nor upon operational design domain exit; or\n(b) An automated driving system to achieve minimal risk condition, given the\nsame circumstances identified in paragraph (a) of this subsection;\n(4) \"Fully autonomous vehicle\" means a motor vehicle equipped with an automated\ndriving system designed to function without a human driver as a level 4 or 5 system\nunder SAE J3016;\n(5) \"Human driver\" means a natural person in the vehicle with a valid license to operate\na motor vehicle who controls all or part of the dynamic driving task;\n(6) \"Minimal risk condition\" means a condition to which a person, human driver, or an\nautomated driving system may bring a vehicle after performing the DDT fallback in\norder to reduce the risk of a crash when a given trip cannot or should not be\ncompleted;\n(7) \"Operational design domain\" or \"ODD\" means the operating conditions under which\na given automated driving system is specifically designed to function, including but\nnot limited to:\n(a) Environmental, geographical, and time-of-day restrictions; and\n(b) The requisite presence or absence of certain traffic and roadway\ncharacteristics;\n(8) \"Public agency\" has the same meaning as in KRS 61.870;\n(9) \"Request to intervene\" means a notification by an automated driving system to a\nhuman driver that the human driver should promptly begin or resume performance\nof part or all of the dynamic driving task; and\n(10) \"SAE J3016\" means  the \"Taxonomy and Definitions for Terms Related to Driving\nAutomation Systems for On-Road Motor Vehicles\" published by SAE International\non June 15, 2018, as amended.","path":["KRS Chapter 186"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=55487","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:39Z","sha256":"ed6c0069ee98af9f0c9904a639eebab7bd02d243a2481b2a7a6d7194034b4610","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-186.752","next":"us-ky/krs-186.763"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
