{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-186a.100","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 186A.100","heading":"Application, procedure, and use for temporary motor vehicle","body":"registration.\n(1) A motor vehicle dealer issued a dealer plate under KRS 186.070 who sells a vehicle\nto a person who will title and register the vehicle for use upon the highw ays of this\nstate or another state shall equip the vehicle with:\n(a) The buyer's existing Kentucky license plate if the customer traded in a vehicle\nbearing that plate and the vehicle will be titled and registered in Kentucky.\nThe cost of this temporary us e of the existing plate shall be three dollars ($3),\nof which the clerk shall retain two dollars ($2). This cost shall not replace any\nother fees for reissuance of the existing plate at registration of the purchased\nvehicle; or\n(b) A temporary tag executed in the manner prescribed in this section and in KRS\n186A.105 and 186A.110, which shall be valid for sixty (60) days from the\ndate the vehicle is delivered to the purchaser. The cost of the tag shall be three\ndollars ($3), of which the county clerk shall retain two dollars ($2).\n(2) (a) A motor vehicle dealer who meets the requirements of subsection (1) of this\nsection shall:\n1. Apply to the county clerk of the county in which the dealer maintains\nhis or her principal place of business for issuance of temporary tags; and\n2. Not apply to the county clerk of any other county unless granted\npermission by the Motor Vehicle Commission.\n(b) When applying for temporary tags, a motor vehicle dealer:\n1. Shall report the number of sales in the previous year;\n2. Shall be limited to an initial purchase of temporary tags of no more than\none hundred twenty -five percent (125%) of the number of sales in the\nprevious year; and\n3. May provide the Motor Vehicle Com mission with evidence of sales in\nexcess of eighty -five percent (85%) of the number of tags received\nunder subparagraph 2. of this paragraph, and the Motor Vehicle\nCommission may allow the dealer to purchase additional temporary\ntags.\n(c) A motor vehicle d ealer shall make application for temporary tags on forms\nsupplied to the county clerk by the Transportation Cabinet.\n(3) The county clerk of any county who receives a proper application for issuance of\ntemporary tags shall record the number of each tag iss ued upon the application of\nthe dealer for temporary tags, or if a group of consecutively numbered temporary\ntags are issued to a dealer in connection with a single application, record the\nbeginning and ending numbers of the group on the application.\n(4) The clerk shall retain, for a period of two (2) years, one (1) copy of the dealer's\ntemporary tag application, and ensure that it reflects the numbers appearing on the\ntags issued with respect to the application. These copies may be kept by the county\nclerk in an electronic format.\n(5) (a) If the owner of a motor vehicle submits to the county clerk a properly\ncompleted application for Kentucky certificate of title and registration\npursuant to KRS 186A.120, any motor vehicle required to be registered and\ntitled in Kentucky, that is not currently registered and titled in Kentucky, may\nbe equipped with a temporary tag, which shall be valid for sixty (60) days\nfrom the date of issuance, issued by the county clerk for the purpose of\noperating the vehicle in Kentuc ky while assembling the necessary documents\nin order to title and register the vehicle in Kentucky.\n(b) The Transportation Cabinet may promulgate administrative regulations in\naccordance with KRS Chapter 13A governing this section.\n(6) (a) The county clerk  may issue a temporary tag to the owner of a motor vehicle\nthat is currently registered and titled in Kentucky.\n(b) A temporary tag authorized by this subsection shall be used for emergency or\nunusual purposes as determined by the county clerk for the purp ose of\nmaintaining the owner's current registration.\n(c) A temporary tag authorized by this subsection may only be issued by the\ncounty clerk and shall be valid for a period of between twenty -four (24) hours\nand seven (7) days, as determined is necessary by the clerk.\n(d) A county clerk shall not issue a temporary tag authorized by this subsection\nunless the owner of the motor vehicle applying for the tag presents proof of\nmotor vehicle insurance pursuant to KRS 304.39-080. Proof of insurance for a\npersonal motor vehicle shall be determined by the county clerk as provided in\nKRS 186A.042.\n(e) A temporary tag issued pursuant to this subsection shall not be reissued by the\ncounty clerk for the same owner and same motor vehicle within one (1) year\nof issuance of a temporary tag.","path":["KRS Chapter 186A"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=56224","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:39Z","sha256":"25c060502097b87c7397d6002d0ba892feb96547d59bec6e5ca652127898d5d5","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-186a.097","next":"us-ky/krs-186a.105"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
