{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-189.095","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 189.095","heading":"Brake linings, sale when not of approved type prohibited.","body":"(1) On and after January 1, 1967, it shall be unlawful to sell, or to display for sale, any\nbrake lining unless of a type which has been submitted to the secretary of the\nTransportation Cabinet for approval and for which a certificate of approval has been\nissued by the secretary and is then in effect; provided, however, that no owner of a\nmotor vehicle shall be required to replace brake linings which were installed before\nJune 16, 1966 solely because such linings have not been approved in accordance\nwith the provisions of this section.\n(2) The secretary shall, in order to insure safe operation of motor vehicles, prescribe\nuniform specifications as to the stopping ability, pedal force, lining integrity,\nstability, fade and recovery characteristic requirements of brake linings and shall\ndetermine whether any brake lining submitted complies with such rules and uniform\nstandards; provided, however, that in order to promote uniformity between the\nstates and thereby avoid increased costs to the people of this state, du e to the\nnecessity of complying with diverse requirements in the distribution and sale of\nbrake linings, the secretary is hereby authorized to adopt and maintain the standards\nand specifications which are adopted by the several states pursuant to the\nprocedures of the Vehicle Equipment Safety Compact, or those of the Society of\nAutomotive Engineers, whichever in the discretion of the secretary will better\nprotect the safety of the people of this state.","path":["KRS Chapter 189"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=6307","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:41Z","sha256":"f6f417a48eb47f8b7e104feb5cbab0101373cd808e839f7c8aaac8e938cb8784","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-189.090","next":"us-ky/krs-189.100"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
