{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-189.284","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 189.284","heading":"Operation of alternative-speed motorcycle on highway.","body":"(1) As used in this section, \"alternative-speed motorcycle\" shall have the same meaning\nas in KRS 186.010.\n(2) A person may operate an alternative-speed motorcycle on a highway if:\n(a) The motorcycle bears a sticker, affixed by the manufacturer or dealer, on t he\nleft side of the rear window that indicates the vehicle's maximum speed rating;\n(b) The motorcycle is equipped with:\n1. Headlights, front and rear turn signal lights, taillights, and brake lights;\n2. Three (3) red reflectors, two (2) of which must be pl aced on each side as\nfar to the rear of the vehicle as practicable, and one (1) of which must be\nplaced on the rear of the vehicle;\n3. An exterior mirror mounted on the driver's side of the vehicle and either\nan exterior mirror mounted on the passenger's s ide of the vehicle or an\ninterior mirror;\n4. A parking brake;\n5. A windshield that conforms to the federal motor vehicle safety standard\nprovided in 49 C.F.R. 571.205;\n6. A seatbelt assembly that conforms to the federal motor vehicle safety\nstandard provided in 49 C.F.R. 571.209; and\n7. A roll bar, roll cage, or crushproof body design;\n(c) The posted speed limit of the highway is thirty -five (35) miles per hour or\nless;\n(d) The operator of the a lternative-speed vehicle does not cross a roadway at an\nat-grade intersection where the roadway being crossed has a posted speed\nlimit of more than thirty -five (35) miles per hour unless the intersection is\nequipped with an electronic traffic signal;\n(e) The operator has a valid motorcycle operator's license in his or her possession;\nand\n(f) The alternative-speed motorcycle has not been modified to increase its speed\nabove its original standard manufactured limit.\n(3) An alternative -speed motorcycle operati ng on a highway shall be insured in\ncompliance with KRS 304.39 -080 by the owner or operator, and the proof of\ninsurance shall be inside the vehicle at all times of operation on a highway.\n(4) An alternative -speed motorcycle operating on a highway is consid ered to be a\nmotorcycle as defined in KRS 186.010 and shall be titled in accordance with KRS\nChapter 186A and registered as a motorcycle in accordance with KRS 186.050(2).\n(5) An operator of an alternative -speed motorcycle shall be exempt from the protecti ve\nheadgear requirements of KRS 189.285.\n(6) Except as provided in this section, an operator of an alternative -speed motorcycle\noperating on a highway shall comply with the traffic regulations of KRS Chapter\n189 and shall be subject to the provisions of KRS Chapter 189A.","path":["KRS Chapter 189"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=6360","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:42Z","sha256":"bfa9d76d19a2bd21516cdeed69f4234ef0bd42ddf2698ab9fd7cc4fc5babcf07","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-189.283","next":"us-ky/krs-189.285"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
