{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-189.294","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 189.294","heading":"Use of personal communication device by minor prohibited while","body":"operating motor vehicle, motorcycle, or moped in motion on traveled portion\nof roadway -- Exclusions -- Administrative regulations.\n(1) As used in this section, \"personal communication dev ice\" shall have the same\nmeaning as defined in KRS 189.292.\n(2) Any person under the age of eighteen (18) who has been issued an instruction\npermit, intermediate license, or operator's license shall not operate a motor vehicle,\nmotorcycle, or moped that is  in motion on the traveled portion of a roadway while\nusing a personal communication device, except to summon medical help or a law\nenforcement or public safety agency in an emergency situation.\n(3) Use of a personal communication device does not include a  stand-alone global\npositioning system, a global positioning or navigation system that is physically or\nelectronically integrated into the motor vehicle, or an in -vehicle security,\ndiagnostics, and communications system, but does include manually entering\ninformation into the global positioning system feature of a personal communication\ndevice.\n(4) This section shall not apply to the use of a citizens band radio or an amateur radio\nby a motor vehicle operator.\n(5) The secretary of the Transportation Cabinet  may promulgate administrative\nregulations pursuant to KRS Chapter 13A to implement the provisions of this\nsection, including but not limited to updates or advances in the automotive and\ninformation technology industries.","path":["KRS Chapter 189"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=39751","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:42Z","sha256":"15bece360529cb945e721321e56857e8e1616a3ee77b7243e9a04ae16d5397cd","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-189.292","next":"us-ky/krs-189.300"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
