{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-18a.205","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 18A.205","heading":"Life insurance  for public employees  and  certain retirees --","body":"Definitions.\n(1) The  secretary of the Finance  and  Administration Cabinet, upon  the\nrecommendation  of the secretary, may  procure from one (1) or more life\ninsurance companies, authorized to do business in this state, a policy or\npolicies of group life insurance insuring the lives of all or any class or classes of\npublic employees.  The  policy or policies shall be  approved  by  the\ncommissioner  of insurance and  may  contain such  provisions as  the\ncommissioner of insurance approves whether or not otherwise permitted by the\ninsurance laws. It is intended that life insurance may  be made  available for\npublic employees, except that the procuring is permissive.\n(2) (a) As  used in KRS  18A.205 to 18A.215, \"public employee\" shall mean  a\nperson who:\n1. Is regularly employed by a public employer; and\n2. Is also:\na. A contributing member  of any one (1) of the state-administered\nretirement systems;\nb. A  retiree of a state-administered retirement system who  is\nemployed  in a  regular full-time position for purposes of\nretirement coverage, but who is not eligible to contribute to one\n(1) of the systems administered by Kentucky Retirement\nSystems or County Employees Retirement System pursuant to\nKRS  61.637(17) or 78.5540(4);\nc. An  individual participating in an  optional retirement plan\nauthorized by KRS 161.567; or\nd. An  individual eligible to participate in a  retirement plan\nestablished by an employer who  ceases participating in the\nKentucky  Employees  Retirement System  pursuant to KRS\n61.522  whose  employees participated in the life insurance\nplans administered by the Personnel Cabinet prior to the\nemployer's effective cessation date in the Kentucky Employees\nRetirement System.\n(b) Notwithstanding the definition of \"public employee\" in this subsection, any\nfederally funded time-limited employee may receive insurance coverage.\n(3) As  used in this section and KRS  18A.210, \"public employer\" shall mean  the\nfollowing employers, if the employer  has  opted to participate in the\nstate-sponsored group life insurance program:\n(a) Any department, office, board, agency, commission, authority, or branch\nof state government;\n(b) A public postsecondary educational institution;\n(c) Any department, office, board, agency, commission, authority, or branch\nof a city, urban-county, charter county, county, unified local government,\nor consolidated local government; or\n(d) Any certified or classified employee or elected member  of a local board of\neducation.\n(4) As used in KRS  18A.205 to 18A.225, \"premiums\" shall mean premiums to be\npaid on any type of insurance authorized under KRS 18A.205 to 18A.225.","path":["KRS Chapter 18A"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=50811","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:48:40Z","sha256":"ff43f2e645c00a61aed01ef4f71b68cc427eac79dfac614e8bf9ff75ffef6b40","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-18a.204","next":"us-ky/krs-18a.210"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
