{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-198b.055","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 198B.055","heading":"Structural steel welding on state government projects -- Definitions for","body":"section -- Testing and certification requirements -- Standards.  (Effective\nJanuary 1, 2027)\n(1) As used in this section, unless the context otherwise requires:\n(a) \"Accredited testing facility\" means a facility that tests and certifies welders\nand welding inspectors, and which has been accredited by the AWS;\n(b) \"ASME\" means the American Society of Mechanical Engineers;\n(c) \"AWS\" means the American Welding Society;\n(d) \"Certified welding inspector\" means a person who has been certified by the\nAWS to inspect structural steel welding projects and is independent of a\nKentucky building program having jurisdiction;\n(e) \"D1.1\" means the current version of the Structural Welding Co de-Steel,\napproved American National Standard from the AWS;\n(f) \"D1.5\" means the current version of the Bridge Welding Code, approved\nAmerican National Standard from the AWS jointly with the American\nAssociation of State Highway and Transportation Officials;\n(g) \"Structural steel welding\" means structural welds, weld repair, the structural\nsystem, and the welding of all primary steel members of a structure per D1.1\nand D1.5 established by the AWS. Where ASME work is required, it shall be\ndone by ASME certified welders; and\n(h) \"Welding standards\" means the specifications, guidelines, tests, and other\nmethods used to develop a system of quality control to ensure that welding is\nconducted in such a manner that all welds must meet, at a minimum, D1.1 and\nD1.5 standards established by the AWS.\n(2) To ensure the safety, quality, and integrity of structural steel welding and that all\nwelding standards are met, the following requirements shall be mandated by general\ncontractors, project managers, contractors, and su bcontractors in all projects\ninvolving structural steel welding where the design professional responsible for the\nproject includes the D1.1 or D1.5 in the job specifications:\n(a) Welders performing structural steel welding on a project shall have been\ntested and certified by:\n1. An accredited testing facility; or\n2. An individual who has been accredited by the AWS to test and certify\nwelders and welding inspectors. This individual  could be anyone who\nhas been certified by the AWS to inspect structural steel welding\nprojects; and\n(b) Structural steel welding performed on a project shall meet welding standards.\n(3) This section shall only apply to projects:\n(a) Occurring pursuant to state government contracts; and\n(b) When requested by the contracting state government entity.\n(4) This section shall not apply to welding projects performed or requested by a\nhomeowner or farmer on the premises of the homeowner or farmer.","path":["KRS Chapter 198B"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=58276","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:51Z","sha256":"ced489ab0b305458c9434608382aae2265b5180718bec57c4944fc8ef7c44d41","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-198b.050","next":"us-ky/krs-198b.060"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
