{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-198b.550","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 198B.550","heading":"Definitions for KRS  198B.555 to 198B.630.","body":"As used in KRS 198B.555 to 198B.630, unless the context requires otherwise:\n(1) \"Department\" means the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction;\n(2) \"Commissioner\" means the commissioner of the department;\n(3) \"Fire protection sprinkler contractor\" means  a  person engaged  in the\npreparation of technical drawings, installation, repair, alteration, extension,\nmaintenance, or inspection of fire protection sprinkler systems and has in his or\nher employment a certificate holder;\n(4) \"Fire protection sprinkler contractor's license\" means the license issued by the\ncommissioner to a fire protection sprinkler contractor upon application being\napproved, fee paid and the satisfactory completion of the requirements of KRS\n198B.580. The license shall be issued in the name  of the fire protection\nsprinkler contractor with the name  or names  of the certificate holder noted\nthereon;\n(5) \"Certificate holder\" means  an individual who has satisfactorily met and the\nrequirements established in KRS  198B.570 and has received a certificate from\nthe commissioner; and\n(6) \"Fire protection sprinkler system\" means a system of piping for which technical\ndrawings have been prepared by or preparation supervised by a certificate\nholder in accordance with fire protection engineering standards. The system is\nsupplied from a reliable, constant, and sufficient water, gas, or chemical\nsupply, such as a gravity tank, fire pump, reservoir, or pressure tank, or\nconnection by underground piping to a city, county, municipal water district,\nauthorized water main, or both. The sprinkler system is considered the fire\nprotection sprinkler system for purposes of KRS  198B.550 to 198B.630, and is\na  network of specially sized or hydraulically designed piping and includes\ninstallations overhead and underground in a building, structure, or area, and to\nwhich sprinklers are connected in systematic pattern. The system includes a\ncontrolling valve and a device for actuating an alarm when  a system is in\noperation. The system is usually activated by heat from a fire and causes the\ndischarge of water, gas, or chemical over the fire area. Fire protection sprinkler\nsystems shall include the following types: wet-pipe systems, dry-pipe systems,\npre-action systems, deluge systems, combined  dry-pipe and  pre-action\nsystems, antifreeze systems and circulating closed loop systems, systems\nutilizing gasses or chemicals, and any other fire suppression system approved\nby the state fire marshal or the chief building code official of the department.","path":["KRS Chapter 198B"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=46922","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:52Z","sha256":"887c6ed32e29dbbb056ee4be04a0a17687fddd6fe0cd70229c359d0d7dcc0399","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-198b.540","next":"us-ky/krs-198b.555"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
