{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-199.585","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 199.585","heading":"Recognition of foreign adoptions -- Registration in Commonwealth --","body":"When KRS 199.470 petition required.\n(1) The Commonwealth of Kentucky shall recognize a decree, judgment, or final order\nof adoption issued by a court or other governmental authority w ith appropriate\njurisdiction in a foreign country when the child to be adopted has been approved for\nUnited States citizenship, or as otherwise provided by federal law.\n(2) Upon presentation of an original decree, judgment, or final order of adoption issue d\nby a court or other governmental authority with appropriate jurisdiction in a foreign\ncountry, the secretary or his or her designee shall issue, within thirty (30) days, a\ncertified notice that the foreign adoption is registered in the Commonwealth of\nKentucky. The secretary or his or her designee may require a translated copy if the\noriginal decree, judgment, or final order is not in English. The cabinet shall\nmaintain all records and notices of foreign adoptions in a manner similar to other\nadoption records.\n(3) A petition for adoption under KRS 199.470 shall be required for a child born\noutside the United States without a decree, judgment, or final order of adoption\nissued by a court or other governmental authority with appropriate jurisdiction in a\nforeign country, or for any child born outside of the United States who does not\nqualify for United States citizenship upon entry into the United States.","path":["KRS Chapter 199"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=7196","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:51:54Z","sha256":"817d3d4729270dd9c524d6e9ea4f6c80a03d76722fb1d1d5259e3b9fc9a77cf1","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-199.580","next":"us-ky/krs-199.590"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
