{"data":{"id":"us-ky/krs-214.187","jurisdiction":"us-ky","citation":"KRS 214.187","heading":"Statewide hepatitis C  education, awareness,  and  information","body":"program.\n(1) The  Department for Public Health shall develop a statewide education,\nawareness, and information program on hepatitis C. The hepatitis C education,\nawareness, and information program may be incorporated into other existing\nhealth education programs. The Department for Public Health may  make\navailable on its Internet Web  site protocols, guidelines, and materials for\nhepatitis C education, awareness, and information programs that increase the\nunderstanding of the disease among general and high-risk populations.\n(2) The  hepatitis C education, awareness, and information program may include\nmaterial to specifically address individuals who may be at high risk of infection,\nincluding but not limited to law enforcement officials, corrections personnel,\nprisoners, veterans, individuals who received blood transfusions prior to 1992,\nhemophiliacs, students, and minority communities. The program may  utilize\neducation  materials developed  by  health-related companies  and\ncommunity-based  or national advocacy organizations. The  program  may\ninclude but not be limited to counseling, patient support groups, and existing\nhotlines for consumers.\n(3) In developing the hepatitis C education, awareness, and information program,\nthe department shall consult the University of Kentucky College of Medicine,\nthe University of Louisville School of Medicine, the Pikeville College School of\nOsteopathic Medicine, the American Liver Foundation, the Centers for Disease\nControl and  Prevention, and  any  other scientific, medical, or advocacy\norganizations to develop the protocols and guidelines for the hepatitis C\neducation, awareness, and information program. The protocols and guidelines\nmay  include but are not limited to the following:\n(a) The risk factors associated with hepatitis C acquisition and transmission;\n(b) The  most  recent scientific and  medical information on  hepatitis C\nprevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and  therapeutic decision\nmaking;\n(c) Tracking and reporting of acute cases of hepatitis C by public health\nofficials;\n(d) Protocols for public safety and health care workers who come in contact\nwith hepatitis C patients; and\n(e) Surveillance programs to determine the prevalence of hepatitis C  in\nethnic and other high-risk populations.\n(4) The  Department for Public Health may  coordinate with the Department of\nVeterans' Affairs and the Department of Corrections to establish specific\nrecommendations  for the hepatitis C education, awareness, and information\nprogram. The protocols and guidelines established by the Department for\nPublic Health, the Department of Corrections, and the Department of Veterans'\nAffairs may include topics specified in subsection (3) of this section and may\ninclude but are not limited to protocols within state agencies to enable\ndepartments to provide appropriate treatment for individuals with hepatitis C,\nprotocols for the education of state agency officials and other employees who\nwork with individuals with hepatitis C, and protocols within the Department of\nCorrections to provide written hepatitis C information to prisoners on the date\nof their probation, parole, or release.\n(5) The  Department for Public Health shall make  information on the hepatitis C\neducation, awareness, and information program available upon request.","path":["KRS Chapter 214"],"source_url":"https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/statute.aspx?id=46332","current_through":"Includes enactments through the 2026 Regular Session","vintage":"09/05/2026","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T20:52:18Z","sha256":"d1a617bb99a2b9ae5d2666da82895d6c92110be62831a42ff13a96d8cbbfaaf0","source_id":"us-ky","stale":false,"prev":"us-ky/krs-214.185","next":"us-ky/krs-214.190"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
